The ECMWF paints a picture for an impressive inversion beginning later this week.  We get a shot of fairly cool air and then immediately enter a period of strong ridging with only weak offshore flow.  Looks like a very good shot at a decent period of below normal temps.

The big picture looks very promising for a colder pattern to develop by early February as well.

Euros a little wetter than the gfs coming up.

Very dry by the end of the week though.  That ridge building in so strongly is a good thing if you want below normal temps and a better shot at legit cold by early Feb.

Looking good to me for stronger ridging, inversion, east wind/fake cold potential, then retrogression in 10-14 days. February just might deliver again.

We are on the same page for sure.  I want some big time inversion action until the good stuff comes.

That has to be one of the all time greatest run to run improvements I've even seen on the EPS at the 500mb level.

Well, Krakatoa’s big blast was also a phreatic eruption. I’m not sure the amount of ejected material will be less w/ Tonga, though the amount of SO2 might be.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know that Krakatoa was a phreatic eruption.

Oh that's $$$ even better than the greatly improved CMCE. Note how the contours bend around from the north. Looks like February is going to deliver yet again.

As much as I would have bet against another good February, it's looking very possible.  There was a long period of great Febs in the 19th century (many great ones 1883-1894), but other than that this streak is already top tier.

If something big actually happens in February, 1922-23 would be a good analog for this winter.  The December event was very similar to that winter, and the period between that and the big late Jan to mid Feb cold period featured the same crud we have seen this winter.

Experienced the most dynamic winter storm I have witnessed last night here near kristiansund Norway.  50-70mph gusts, a mix of snow, sleet and hail along with lightening, big waves coming up over the bridges and roads. Pretty incredible! Overall only about 1” accumulation because it was just above freezing most of the time. Even saw the northern lights for the first time a couple nights ago.

I feel as though in other boring Januaries we were at least treated to some eye candy-- this is the most boring series of runs I've seen. There's absolutely nothing there.

Had to look it up... that town has a surprisingly Seattle-like winter climate given its at 63N.     The big climate difference is that summer in Seattle is much warmer and sunnier.

Looks like the Jet stream was suppressed over California in Jan 1923 as we had 85" of snow that month versus 0" for this Jan.

Also this Jan looks to join Jan 2015 and Jan 1991 as the only ones with 0" snow recorded. We have also never had a 100"+ snow month followed up with a 0" snow month. Very unusual.

It's a European thing:  The UK likes to liberally sprinkle extra letter "U"s in their worlds, the Germanic language like to put extra dots over their A O & U, Spanish went off and doubled up letters to create 2 whole new "letters" in their alphabet...

And in Norway they have an affinity for the letter "E"

February 1950 almost did that in K-Falls with a below average month but it wasn't zero after the 5 feet that fell in January. lol

There's reasons I think a true snow lover would like 55-56 more because there wasn't a dull month in there from November to March.

1949-50 snow
Nov - 1.5"
Dec - 10.0"
Jan - 56.5"
Feb - 3.0"
Mar - 0.0"

Somehow none in March but Klamath Falls had snow in April 1950. I do question some of the older info out there.

March is often snowier than November in more than one way.
