I don't have any met training or anything, so I just spent a while trying to teach myself what's causing a cold front tonight. I got confused for a while but now I understand it: there's high pressure up above Alaska, and strong lows in the N Pacific. The gradient is drawing cold air down over the water, at which point it is being drawn along the Canadian coast in trail of the low pressure that has passed over us, causing a very modified arctic front that will cause upper air temps to be cold. It took me a while to understand why the cold air was being drawn here and not SW into the Pacific but now I see. Northwesterly wind to the coast changes to WSW after the cold front leaves and makes way for ridging into the extended. Am I basically right here, or am I misinterpreting it? Having fun trying to work this out on my own!

I'm in the same boat as you so I appreciate hearing someone walk through it. What you said makes sense to me.

I would add that the westerlies are another reason the air tends to move in an easterly direction independent of the surface pressure pattern.

This pretty much sums up the CFS for the next month 😭 It’s so depressing not having any model eye candy in the works. Here’s to hoping for another great Feb. Happy Friday everyone!

It will change. Winter will not be lasting in the midwest/east.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Was just watching the Leavenworth live cam again and it now appears to be fairly windy with the trees moving back and forth.

Love old Suzukis. My favorite is probably the samurai, but I do also like the front end of the Geo Tracker

It's one run.  You have to use a multiple run average with that model.

Did I see that somebody is saying the La Nina is over or ending.  There is so much stuff to go through on here I might have misunderstood something.  At any rate there is no imminent end to the Nina that I can see this year.  In fact I would have expected some warming of the ENSO regions to begin by now if a warm event was going to happen this year.

Phil said a Nino might be hard to avoid at this point.    The latest update from BOM in Australia also says we head towards neutral in the spring and then a weak Nino by the end of summer.

FWIW weak ninos arent necessarily bad for snow production in the winters, though some places are far more favored than others.

Yeah... not saying anything about next winter.   Its probably pretty irrelevant to our chances.

Looked it up, I'm not really to the point of seeking an actual degree, mostly just looking for informal introductions. Thanks for the tip though!
