PNW January 2022, Unoriginal Thread Title

When was the last time we had a great cold/snow event in late December and again in February? The only one I can think of is 2017/18 but are there any notable ones? I do not have a good databank of pre mid 1980’s in my head.

2008-09 had a fairly cool and troughy February with a couple of snow events.

Otherwise might have to go back to 1992-93, although Western WA got screwed pretty hard in February 1993 north of Clark County.

On a personal note, one of my dogs (My avatar pic is of her.), has been missing for about a week and a half. Her disappearance has baffled me, she's 10 years old, she never runs off, and I was unable to track her at all in the snow. I was worried she had wandered off and fallen in a creek, through the ice on a pond, been killed by the cougar that has been stalking the hill, etc... The worst part was the not knowing. Anyways, my wife suggested today that I search animal shelters, and lost dog postings.

Seems obvious, but the area we live in is so remote, it seemed out of the question she would be at a shelter, we posted on the local facebook page, and no one had seen her, so I had thought the worst had happened. But today we located her at a shelter in Vancouver, not quite sure how she got there, but it is definitely her... They said she did not like kennel life, and has been fostered up in Skamania County and has been LOVING the snow. Such unexpectedly great news, we'll be picking her up this evening. My guess is she made it to the highway, and someone passing through picked her up and maybe the lived up in Clark county so they dropped her off at the shelter up there. Very strange.

Wow. My friend that is baffling. I'm sure glad it turned out for the best though! Wow.

Yeah. I'm sure the GEFS Day 8+ won't be this progressive with the ridge backing off and amplifying.

Yeah I'm not so much into the doom and gloom vibes that have been floating around this month. -ENSO and recent climo suggest a turnaround in February. LR guidance has been steadfast on it for quite some time now. Often LR ensembles will pick up on a pattern change signal a week or so too early, then it comes forward with time. Early February will bring a turnaround in all likelihood.

It’s supposed to be daylight in Tonga right now.

Earlier eruptions were primarily steam above 11k feet. Given the total darkness, it looks like were was more solid ejecta this go around.

Looks like it triggered a tsunami too. Man that was fast.

Pretty incredible video of the moderate tsunami it created. You can see the spreading ash plume covering the sky. From my untrained eye it looks like a VEI3 or so. Solid expected return interval of around a year, though likely not much of a short term climate impact.

GeologyHub (awesome channel, just a volcano nerd dishing out no-BS science) made a video today regarding yesterday morning's eruption. Tomorrow he will have a new video out about this evening's eruption, which appears to be orders of magnitude larger.

sulfide aerosol release from volcanic ejecta is strongly correlated with cooler summers in the PNW ;)

Maybe not so... Enhanced zonal winds and stronger TPV means warmer midlatitude NA and Eurasia. In fact Pinatubo is likely partially responsible for that unforgivable 1992-93 Andrew-fest. But the correlation for cooler, troughier summers is absolutely there. a solid VEI5 or 6 could be the key to a Jun-Aug 2000 repeat (which is honestly much more ecologically beneficial for y'all than a cooler winter.)

Fiji is 700km away from the volcano and people still reporting booms and ground/buildings shaking there.

This one seems legit.
