The GFS has outperformed the ECMWF again.  The 12z ECMWF showed a major wave of early precip here that didn't happen.  The GFS never showed that.  The GFS has also handled the cold outflow winds much better.

We had a little mix during the day... but just a few stray flurries here now.    My son just came back from Safeway and said it wasn't doing anything down there and not icy.

Ya I was just looking at the current weather stations in the area and they are all over the place over there changing from wintry mix to freezing rain.  Looks to get interesting in the next few hours as that band drops south. Should be all snow by then with these temps.

I'm not too familiar with the greater metropolitan Yelm area, but Bellingham runs into that a lot, the city itself is rainy and 40, but parts of the school district are 1,000-1,300 feet, or are on the north face of hills and don't get sun to melt the roads, so the roads are still really sh*tty.  It sucks for the majority of students but I guess they have to account for everyone.

We're late also (South Kitsap).  County wants to get the nasty side roads and side walks done.  Didn't get above freezing til today.

Nature is putting on and awesome show around these parts. Just getting caught up and glad to see some fun weather dynamics playing out.  Mostly dry down here today but was blessed with quite the show of Orca, porpoise, Baleen whale and a sea lion thrashing salmon about!   All in Commencement Bay!  Photography credit to Jason Cook (Orca Network) who caught this moment! I grabbed a still shot from his video. So cool to see this locally

43/30 here and current temp is 41*

NE wind 8 ( gotta love a NE wind!).

Sometime around June 2016 I was at I believe Beverly Beach on the Oregon Coast and there was a whale no more than 100' off the beach, it was amazing. My oldest daughter was 3 1/2 at the time and it terrified her. I remember it had barnacles on it, and it smelled terrible. Not sure what kind of whale it was, but it was huge.

Crazy precip on the drive home from my in laws. The fattest splats I've ever seen on a windshield. Wish it could be all snow but oh well, this is still a really fascinating setup.

Down to 35.1 and 1" in the past 24 hours, which basically means since around 11 am.

Low - I don't have the data

Sub 40 highs - Not quite

Sub-freezing highs - Try again

Down  to 47 here, but I think it is still mostly rain.

Go sit in your car to confirm via splat test.

So strange how cold troughs seem to deliberately avoid the west as the calendar turns over to mid-January. Like clockwork the ridging comes back.

I think that positions us better to get to another nice block sooner as well.

Very cool experience!!!  The whales are amazingly HUGE even these local Orca.  When I get a better camera can’t wait to get shots of the male J-27 Blackberry……his dorsal fin is massive.

Yeah, quicker retrogression if the ridge starts out further west.

The 12z Euro was a worst case outcome that would (verbatim) likely take 3+ weeks to complete said retrogression.

Snow is wet again and getting lighter but now we have some wind. Walked outside and could here limbs snapping.  Back edge of front is passing but by the looks of the sat pic a bunch of precip yet to come just off the coast.  Soon as front passed just now temp is up to 33. What a fuking crazy night. About 5 inches. Very wet. If it was colder probably would of been over a foot. Tonight is much like one evening in 2019 only it was colder that night but I had thunder that night as well.

Rain is definitely picking up. Can hear it hitting the skylight now pretty good. Temp down to 36.

I'm pretty excited about how the GFS gets this area more than cold enough for snow later.  It has been doing a pretty good job with stuff like that lately.
