2 AM and hearing distant thunder. Sky is lit up northeast of here, definitely something brewing over the eastern inland valleys.

Brief but strong shower around 6am. Monsoonal pulse moving on through but it’s competing with the southerly surge now.

Struggling to climb above 70 here because the shallow marine layer is hanging on tight despite the nearby instability

The instability appears to have helped mix things out in the Bight Zone. My sister said thunder and rain woke her up last night in La Crescenta!

Most of the action is well north of here. Low temperature was only 67F this morning.

101F right now, humidity hasn’t arrived here. Thunderstorms brewing over the San Jacinto Mountains and Anza high plain east of here.

Getting cloudier. Temperature has backed down a bit as a result.

Cooler than expected due to cloud cover as the sea breeze continues to roar through under it. Sometimes on days like this a nearby pop up storm will knock out the shallow marine layer and it will suddenly become a lot warmer—that happened a lot in 2015.

This may be a fake monsoon since monsoonal moisture normally comes from the Gulf of California.

They said it's being caused by a low near Pt. Conception. BTW I meant Gulf of California, but Pt. Conception is not the Gulf of California.

Additional rain a bust for my area, but lots of puffy clouds to admire.

 

“Fake monsoon” huh? I knew it felt oddly cool with lower humidity than I’d expect. Pretty standard for late June other than, well, isolated storms. Perhaps the late season low that was turbocharging our eddy tapped into a bit of monsoonal moisture (shifted its trajectory westward)  but also kept the natural AC going for anyone within 5 miles of the water.

Not sure if we got the normal southeast flow with this monsoon event, which is why I said it was fake. 

Clouds are clearing out and cooler air from the Pacific is moving in.

Just drove to Ontario Airport and back. Lightning every minute or so for the entire drive up there, all to the northeast. Ground was wet from Temescal Valley to Ontario. No lightning on the drive back, skies seemed clearer.

The overcast is retreating but man, that breeze is icy. Very shallow—only the beaches are feeling it. Valleys are already well into the 90s today.

Ocean is about where it should be for late June at least locally — still cool enough to create some mondo microclimates.

Climate change hypocrisy. Air conditioning humming away all day long at the school next to us even though it's absolutely useless with no students or teachers there. I'm gonna have to protest at the principal's office. I will bring my Greta pictures and tell them they are racists for not adhering to the dogma of leftism.

Winnetka, infamous valley hotspot, has hit the century mark today!

We ended up getting good clearing after all here at the coast. I imagine beaches will be crowded.

Some cumulus over the mountains this afternoon, but nothing compared to yesterday. Warmer today overall, been sitting at 100F for two hours now.

5 PM and still 100F, has not even begun to cool off. Four hours now of this.

Plenty of gunk out there and the northwest flow is back. If this persists, it’ll start to look like parts of 2020 and 2021 again. Already seeing that all too familiar fog lurking nearby.

Some OC and northern SD county beaches are spared, but it’s pretty solid from there on up and more is flowing in.

Next monsoon pulse seems like it’s starting to erode the southern ends of the cloud deck. Keep it up.

Still dense fog nearby. 72 is likely the high unless it pulls back from my area. South of PV has cleared out but not here yet.

In classic 2020s fashion it hung out to the west all morning before charging in like the barbarian hordes as soon as the sea breeze kicked in.
