Coldest 7 February Weeks On Record For SEA

I'm posting this for comparison purposes to see how this cold wave stacks up with past events. I'm pretty concerned the temperature problems that SEA has experienced in recent months might ruin this, but we shall see. Amazing to think we could have 2 weeks in the top 7 since 2010. I will post the year, dates that made up the 7 day "week", the daily high and low for those dates, and the average for the week.

No question this is headed for being one of the 5 coldest 7 day periods for February since 1945 (the period the Sea - Tac records cover)

The first 3 days...

2014 - 3rd through 5th (avg. so far 31.8)

41-32

37-28

31-22

No doubt the next 4 days will bring that a lot lower.

Very unlikely that the next 4 days are much lower.   Not sure any day will be lower than today... tomorrow will be about the same.

Looks like SEA will be into the upper 30s by Saturday and Sunday.

Tomorrow will be the last really cold day I think.     The air mass is going to moderate per the GFS, Canadian, and the ECMWF.

Well...time to wrap this up.

Looks like SEA came up with its 6th coldest week (7 day period) in February in their period of record. Considering the horrible warm bias that station has had this winter I'm pretty pleased with that.

For the period Feb 3 through 9...

41-32

37-28

31-22

29-21

38-23

42-31

39-31

Avg. 31.8

5 of the 7 max temps were below 40 and all lows freezing or below. Well done!

That gives a rank of...

1. 1989 - 22.4

2. 1956 - 29.5

3. 1950 - 29.7

4. 1962 - 30.6

5. 1949 - 30.7

6. 2014 - 31.8

7. 1985 - 32.2

8. 2011 - 32.4

Two of the top 8 are from this decade which is only half over.

Just for the record... the next 4 days after this post also averaged 31.8 so it did not bring it "a lot lower".

PDX averaged 28.0 for the week. I wonder where that ranks for them.

PDX in this context refers to Portland. The fact that PDX the airport has only had obs since 1940 is not lost on me. However if attempting to compare Portland to Seattle where the airport sits nearly 10 miles from downtown to arrive at a POR of 1890s to present it makes sense to compare it with a Portland thread of similar length. PDX (airport) is more representative of the city than Sea-Tac is for Seattle anyway. Similar elevation for one and both downtown and the airport are situated next to large open water areas.
