can you confirm there is a 4' snow depth near Houghton, MI or the trails up in the U.P.???

Tom, it is hard to confirm as Houghton doesn't keep snow fall records. But in the area here are some official snow depth reports Herman 23.8" Rapid River 15" Baraga 16"  Some CoCoRah reports Atlantic Mine 27" and Ontonagon 20" and to the east Marquette 20" so while there is a lot of snow on the ground it may not be quite up to 4' outside of the deep woods.

It now looks like most of the bad freezing rain will stay to the north of Grand Rapids and most of the snow later in the week will stay to the south of GR. With snow on the ground since late December I would think it is time to think spring.  At this time it is sunny and 30 here.

Trails don't have that big of a base as its constantly worked over. The woods is definitely that deep. I had some buddies up there 2 days before we went playing off trail and the pictures are up to top of chest deep. It's been an incredible Feb up there.

Here in southern iowa it goes  from 63F at noon to 12F at midnight.  Honestly  have never seen a winter with more wild swings.  Sw to nw wind shifts almost daily!  Sometimes  2 or 3 windshifts the same day!

Gorgeous day today weatherwise. Sunny to mostly sunny skies w/ temps in the 40s. Felt really good for a change to not freeze outside. Definitely a beat to my nice snowpack, but still plenty around.

PV   update from the 19th

The latest daily 10hpa 60N zonal wind speed is still quite some way above the average and on this day stands at 43.6 m/s which is +21.439 m/s above the long term mean for 19th February and this puts up 6th on the daily list for today. This continues the general trend we have seen really the entire winter so far. Since there's no sign of any SSW then it seems above average figures are very much likely to continue for the foreseeable.

The latest rolling 10hpa 60N zonal wind speed which is the rolling average from 1st November through to 19th February for 2022 stands at an impressive 41.987 m/s which is +11.462 m/s above the expected rolling mean by this stage of the season and puts 2022 into 3rd position overall and the 3rd strongest vortex year on the record so far. We are threatening to have the overall strongest vortex year on the record if we don't see things slow down soon.

Untitled.thumb.webp.12fd2ba4b20a9fac637194c24a55dd61.webp

The strat. vortex is currently stronger than ERA interim average
and is forecasted to remain stronger than average (according to GEFS-mean)
31 of 31 members have stronger vortex than average at the
last forecast step (2022-03-07 12:00:00)

The zonal mean zonal wind at 10 hPa 60N is today (GFS analysis): 41.3 m/s
Weakest zonal wind at 10 hPa 60N in ERA interim record for todays date is: -23.2 m/s 2018
Strongest zonal wind at 10 hPa 60N in ERA interim record for todays date is: 56.1 m/s 2020

The best part of today too was there was almost no wind. Normally these big warm up days are accompanied by wind, but not today!

Last time it snowed here was January 14-15th, 36 days ago, during the middle of winter.

Since November 1st, 112 days have passed, and we've had 7 precip "events", with 4 of those snow. So this entire winter it's snowed 4x. Pretty unbelievable.

Since January 15th, there have been six snow events here.... totaling 1.2".  Yep, SIX events to get 1.2".  Six dustings.

Here is even worse. Since  Feb 16 2021 only 2 measurable  snows. Jan 1st (6.7) and Jan 14/15th 2022 (12.2) thats 369 days. Had a trace fri eve.  Precip wise:   dry dec except  .60  the last week.   And one  in nov similar.  So really only 4 significant  real measurable events since final week of oct. A few showers or less than .10 along the way! 369 days and only 2 measurable  snows in Ottumwa  iowa is probably  without  precedent? Since Aug 2018 we only had 4 months  significantly   below avg precip.  That ended Aug 1 2022.  Basically  dry since except  final week of Oct. But Jan 16 to Feb  20 with no measurable  snow is a total shocker!  That period  had been our busiest period  for snow / Ice mgmt traditionally.

I forgot our snowfall shut off last February too. We had a great year last year but it still suddenly quit mid February too.

That's a tad bit high around here. Ofc, today's torch prolly halved the amounts OTG. I was in Marshall this pm, where it was a very sunny and windy 46F and what snow they had was big slush puddles in town. On the outskirts (no thanks to the high winds scouring the open countryside), the brown weeds absorbed the stronger sun so much, most of the fields (farm or natural) were barren of snow by the time I was heading home about 6 pm. As for the UP depths, some will certainly hit the 4 foot mark after this storm rolls through over the next couple days. Per WestMJim's reports, most locales outside of the higher ground are less than that currently. 48" depth is not easily achieved, which makes the state record of 117" official record depth just #krazystuff!

Made the same comment to my wife this evening when I got home. Crazy winds kept it from being "top shelf" tho.

As I have ranted about on here prior. Despite 2 storm warnings this month, mby has been in a snow donut hole. I'm just 8 air miles NNW of DTW, yet trail that locale by a full 8 inches month to date. If it weren't for last Feb 15th, I'd now be years without seeing a dbl-digit hit. Been told to not get down on my new area. That it's just freshman bad luck. At least I've got to see what serious cold, windy, and snowy look like around here. It just hasn't been deep. That may be a good thing as snow removal here at this place is atrocious.

SE Wisconsin is getting screwed too, we are at less than half of average snowfall for this time of year. There is one storm that could hit me with snow at the end of the last gfs run that looks good in theory, but gfs loves to throw huge storms at the end of the run which never materialize into anything good. This is rivaling 2001-02 winter here and the next few after that weren't very good either.

Last gfs run says the torch starts early in March too. I'm impressed even this snowboard season sucked. December was a torch, there were six weeks between new years and middle of Feb that was good, now it's rain and warm to ruin the hill some more. Normal season   usually good though December to end of February, I easily lost 4 to 6 weeks of good shredding this year, around half my season. Last week was a bust too. I always used snowboarding to make up for snowmobile being bad but this year snowboarding sucked too. I don't mean to complain it's just it's almost over and I realize i only really had 5 weeks of riding in normal temperature with good snow. Easily the worst winter I've had here.
