November 2015 in the Pacific Northwest

The GFS and its ensembles have been pretty consistently seasonable and active looking in the mid-long range for several runs now.

I agree.  I've seen nothing to give me that sinking feeling yet.

ECMWF has been very consistent with showing a classic split flow pattern...

Here comes some consolidated flow next Wednesday...

Starting to split on Thursday...

http://old.ecmwf.int/products/forecasts/d/getchart/catalog/products/forecasts/medium/deterministic/msl_uv850_z500!Geopotential%20500%20hPa%20and%20Temperature%20at%20850%20hPa!168!North%20America!pop!od!oper!public_plots!2015112700!!chart.gif

And then it ends up in SoCal...

http://old.ecmwf.int/products/forecasts/d/getchart/catalog/products/forecasts/medium/deterministic/msl_uv850_z500!Geopotential%20500%20hPa%20and%20Temperature%20at%20850%20hPa!192!North%20America!pop!od!oper!public_plots!2015112700!!chart.gif

Then the process starts over again next weekend...

Sorry to burst your judgmental bubble but most employees love it. Make a s**t ton of money on double time.

That's a joke right? I've literally heard no one say they like working on Black Friday.

Oregon certainly seems to get sub -20F readings with greater frequency/more ease than Washington. All of the high elevation desert on the eastern side of the state helps. Inland WA is relatively low thanks to the Columbia Basin.

No doubt.

The mean elevation of Oregon is almost twice that of Washington (3,300 ft. v. 1,700 ft.)

That is kind of interesting in light of the fact the northern third of Eastern WA has a much lower normal than anywhere that I know of in Eastern OR.  It must be that in normal weather conditions it runs colder in the northern areas.

At any rate -20s in this pattern is pretty crazy.

It's pretty hard to believe WA only averages 1700 with the Olympics, Cascades, and Okanogan Highlands.  WA has many mountains that are higher than the ones in Oregon.  Very diverse topography.

The Kansas stat is kind of misleading. Washington has fairly diverse topography that gives it the moderate mean, whereas Kansas is basically just a big, flat gradual slope from the high plains to the Missouri River.

18 in Arlington this morning.  Some pretty impressive numbers starting to show up with this cold snap.  SEA managed to drop to 29.  With pressure gradients going very weak the next few days we may see Seattle put up better numbers over the weekend.

Lowest point in Kansas is actually the verdigris river.

Places like Bend probably get warmer more consistently with southerly flow in winter than places in NE Washington.

Exactly. This.

Much of central/eastern Oregon is on a high, volcanic plain, while Washington has more severe elevation extremes throughout due the the carving up of the landscape by rivers, floods and Pleistocene glaciation.

Even the Oregon Cascades are much more gentle and rolling, overall, than the Washington Cascades (especially north of Snoqualmie Pass)

The mean elevation in the Southern Oregon Cascades especially is really really high, for instance, but the mountains are comparatively gentle on the whole.

That is a bit misleading. The mean elevation in Alaska is only 1900 feet as well. The variation in topography is what makes it more interesting.

I agree though eastern Oregon is mostly high desert compared to the Columbia basin. Northeastern Washington gets quite a bit colder though.

I had a low of 20F this morning after a high of only 35F yesterday.  My little microclimate does well in this kind of event.  No wind at all with shade over half of the property during the winter.
