Would be odd for the East to hog the bulk of the troughing in a La Nina February. Last time that happened was 2007-08, and that January was pretty troughy in the West unlike this year.

I’d be surprised if eastern troughing continued through February. Upcoming IO/IPWP MJO would tend to favor some retrogression of the NPAC ridge, allowing the SE-ridge to flare.

But it might be short lived with the next WPAC pulse coming up in March. In tandem with the strong PV, this adds pressure for a dynamic final warming/P7 MJO amplification.

So I suspect there’ll be some serious cold in the Midwest/Plains this spring, possibly even top-tier. April might end up colder than December in a lot of places, if the potential is realized.

A cloudy Groundhog Day means no shadows being cast and thus no rodent being scared by their shadow.    Appears another 6 weeks of winter is off the table.  😀

There's still the ice part that I can get.

But yeah if no snow happens, this could be one WSW that didn't really pan out. We'll see.

I'm more concerned about the kind of t'storms I get later this year.

If the SE ridge can flare mid/late Feb, we’ll have a good shot at early season severe. Plenty of cold in Canada to tighten the thermal gradient.

But if the troughing is too close the storms will end up down in the gulf coast states.

It did actually snow in Janaury 2019, though the end of the month did feature a warm spell.

Last month was pretty much January 2011 at the place I left with a few minor differences.

2020 and 2018 had dry Februaries. Still having flashbacks of May 2018 and April 2020’s neverending rain.
