Wow. This is looking like it could be the biggest late February Arctic blast for much of the CONUS since 2011.

Lets hope that is where the 2011 similarities end.

It rained almost every day for 2 straight months at SEA after that late February cold snap and it did not go below freezing at all in March and April.     That would be pretty depressing... at least to most people.

That was one of the coldest springs on record for Western Oregon, it snowed off and on through March and the end of April up here. Silver Falls had a monthly mean of 39 in April, and May had a -9F departure.

Satanic cold. Though the cold there was focused more in the first half of the month.

Looking at the PRISM data, going back to 1895, April 2011 was the 2nd coldest April on record here (2008 was the coldest), and May 2011 was the coldest May by about 1F, beating out 1899.

Looking at June, it was a cold June, but not as cool as 2012, in that 2008-2012 period 4 out of the 5 June's were well below normal. We've been above average since 2013 though.

Looking at the precip graph, April 2011 was a little above average for precip here, but not notably. March 2011 was top 10 wettest. However, we've been well below normal with precip every year since 2017 in March so we may be due for a wetter March. Looks like the driest stretch of 5 March's since 1923-26.

February continues to be the most consistent winter month for much of the nation.

2022 looks to join 2021, 2019, 2018, 2015, and 2014 as Februaries that had notable to historic cold for significant swaths of the country.

winter is now the last 2 weeks of December and from 2/20 - 3/20.  the rest is pseudo spring

looked back in the records and on 2/25 & 2/26/2011 Spokane was 16/-10.  26 degree range.  the difference between then and what's upcoming is there was 12" of snow on the ground on those days in 2011

The late season cold wave I always think is underrated was March 2009. Check that one out.

My buddy that just moved to Kalispell right before the winter has remarked about how the winters here "aren't bad at all". I hope he get his @ss handed to him. He doesn't even like cold or snow.

To his defense, Kalispell does have relatively "mild" winters compared to other areas within the state east of the divide.

But yeah, this airmass is going to pack a punch for areas even west of the divide.

Let's keep these cold runs going and move timing ahead. No, scratch that. I'm feeling a bit greedy. I want a bigger blast. I want the ridge to amplify a bit sooner so the arctic trough really digs with a prolific late February arctic blast! Yeah! C'MON!!!!
