The barometer's rising so fast that my ears are popping. What a swing.

Thunderstorms on top of a marine layer is one of those west coast weather things that is unique, weird, and really cool. Who in their right mind would look outside and think the atmosphere is favorable for thunderstorms today?
It's surprising how loud the thunder is here in Lakewood, despite the unassuming overcast sky.

GFS is showing Portland at 120F on August 17th at 5PM. Is it just long range chaos? That's 4 degrees higher than the heat wave of 2021.

Was doing some gardening just now in Tacoma. All of a sudden the sunlight dimmed and turned noticeably orange. Looks like the smoke is here!

It's 60 degrees in Steilacoom right now. What the heck is going on? Adiabatic warming from east winds?

The peak winds seem to have passed here in Lakewood. A few fir tree branches have fallen onto the golf course behind my house. Nothing too crazy though. Still have power.

It’s a very cold low level blast we’re in right now…but up above the air is getting warm (at 5000’) or so. It is very odd though with these temps you’d think a blizzard was on the way. Can’t remember an overrunning event that started so cold. Just means this cold air will likely be a b*tch to kick out of here and it’ll hold on for longer than expected most likely.
I'm still a weather noob, and this is the first weather event in western Washington that's really forced me to visualize the atmosphere as a three-dimensional system. It's crazy to see how much warmer the air is at 1500 meters, compared to the surface.

Did 1992-93 have multiple blasts for the Willamette Valley? I feel like I remember folks saying that was the post-Pinatubo winter?
The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai eruption was almost exactly one year ago. I wonder if it's having an effect on the weather this winter?

If you guys have valuable trees, it's probably worth it to prop up their branches with rope and 2x4s as much as possible before this ice event.

Everything is soaking wet here in Lakewood. The roads will become deadly when it all freezes later.

We've got a rain/snow mix in Lakewood! It's 40 degrees out, kind of surprising.
