Surfaces that were treated before the deep freeze began (basically every side street) melted all the crusted snow that they had on them yesterday when it was in the mid-20s here. Parking lots still have that crust on them but it is noticeably softer today.

If anyone misses cold, go to Fairbanks. They're looking at highs in the -30s.

Wouldn't be surprised to crack 50 here which is insane. Usually in this area of the country, temps that warm are immediately succeeded by a powerful cold front. This is just consistent warmth. Makes me wonder how trees are going to react. 

I hardly think we're going to see a "harsh return of winter" in February. Best case scenario, we regress to the mean and enter a more active storm pattern (I think the latter will for sure happen). There is just no cold air in Canada to work with.

I hope we are at least headed for putting some reasonable restrictions on abortion.  Obviously the outright bans on it aren't going to fly.

There are very few sociopolitical issues I actually care about, but abortion is definitely up there. I genuinely do not know how they have convinced themselves that they have the moral high ground here.

For WY/MT and the Upper MW, the best signal for this season is dialing up as we open up FEB....mother nature should deliver the GOODS...

 

0z EPS/GEFS all starting to show a lot of support for a big ticket winter storm to develop over the central CONUS.  The Big Question is, how much blocking will there be in southern Canada?  How much residual cold will be available?  The models are going to be all over the place with this storm system just like they were in late DEC figuring out the Christmas Day Blitz.

 

 

Once the PAC JET begins to cut underneath all the Blocking up across NW NAMER & Canada around the 7th/8th of FEB, this should rebuild the Glacier and the Arctic Attack will Cometh with Vengeance!  

 

 

A lot or all of that snow cover even in Northern MN/ND will be going away with this thaw. 

I worry about ptype with a potential storm in the first week of February. Not the type of worry I should be having in West Central MN at that time of year, but alas...

Wow, that was a blindside. I actually thought that he was running a stronger campaign than Haley in recent weeks. He mopped the floor with her in debates.

I actually think this could boost Haley. I think everyone that is going to vote for Trump in the primaries was voting for Trump to begin with. There were a fair share of never Trumpers in the DeSantis camp and they should shift to Haley.

I dunno, maybe I'm being a Haley weenie here, and I still think a Trump nom is inevitable, but I think this helps more than hurts. It's best that it be 1v1 (Vivek hardly counts anymore and I don't think anyone knows who else is still in the race besides those 3).

Ensembles are actually consistent in pushing this death ridge out of the way near the end of their respective runs. Overall, it does look like we could see a pattern shift around the second week of February. Still a depressing pattern to be entering, but for now, it does appear that there is finally a faint light at the end of the tunnel and we could see a return of Winter in February.

Best it comes then, I think the general consensus is that by March everyone is longing for Spring.

Initiative 2117 is headed for the ballot in Washington State in November.  This would repeal the carbon tax or so called hidden gas tax the state imposed last year that has added an estimated 46 cents per gallon to the cost of gasoline.  This is in spite of the fact the state assured us it would only add a few cents.  Typical of the lying scum bags.

Hope it gets shot down. I get taxing gas (I'd rather have that than a mileage tax that some younger liberals are hoping for), but "carbon taxes" are such a feel-good scam.

At least during the seemingly endless warm December, EPS weeklies sort of hinted at a pullback of some sort in the second week of January (which happened). Now, it's just a constant endless eastern trough and split flow between the mountain ranges. Just looks terrible and we may not have a shot at more winter until March.

Iowa's youngest and most liberal county. Pretty big outlier in Iowa but I'm hoping it speaks well for future results from blue states.
