Nice mountain snow

This pattern unfortunately came too late. As much as I hope otherwise I don't think there will be any widespread accumulation below 500 ft.

Paradise picked up 44" that day so it's certainly possible, but it just seems so strange that it would get so much more. I mean honestly, I'm just skeptical of most snow measurements. It's so hard to measure snowfall whether it's from compaction or drifting or too frequent of measurements.
The National Center for Environmental Information, which maintains the US weather records acknowledges that this reading is a bit suspect so they also list a 52" one day reading from Winthrop on 1/21/35.
52" at Winthrop also seems suspect

This storm is going to be one of the more impressive ones I've seen in the mountains over the last couple years. At least 31" of new snow at Mt. Baker in the last 24 hours and 40" in the last 30 hours. Should probably pick up another 18-24" by morning.
The Washington State 24 hour record is supposedly 65" at Crystal Mountain on 2/24/94, but I find that hard to believe considering how little snow Crystal normally sees. But maybe the pattern was perfect. Paradise has an unofficial record of 70" in 24 hours from 11/26/55 which is a location I'd be more inclined to believe has the record, but that may just be in the record books as a result of not being able to clear off the snowboard one day.
I bet the top of Baker got over 65 inches in 24 hours from this storm. Temps have probably been in the lower teens there given the temps at Camp Muir and I wound assume they received the same amount of precip if not more.

Current general pattern continues on the entire euro run.
Yeah no real chance of accumulating lowland snow though. Great for the mountains.

GFS is great.
GEM is not.
GEM is really good for mountain snow though

51 degres and sunny currently, low of 23. Was a great drive back to Oregon today, i know cascadiawx will downvote this but i think this weather is great! Went to Mt Baker yesterday for the first time in years, had a great climb despite the DISGUSTINGLY low snowpack, which left more open crevasses than I've ever seen up there in winter, you'd think it was late November with the current snowpack.
Snowpack is really abysmal going to be a tough year for the glaciers
-
For WA I don't see what was so great about the GFS and GEM less mountain snow and less lowland snow.

This is really a horrible winter like 2014-2015. Only bright spot was the cold snap. Snowpack is crazy low, and the glaciers will likely suffer another terrible year but unlike the last 3 the snowpack to begin is terrible.

Here's a really interesting website with a lot of photos of old glaciers on the West Coast. Crazy how much some glaciers have retreated.
-
This Jan cold snap was really impressive for the coldest inhabited place in WA, Mazama. They reached -29. Only 3 winters have recorded a temp below -29 68-69, 83-84 and 78-79.

Some people are acting like it's March. It's only January 20th and long-range forecasts have terrible accuracy. Way too early to write off February.

Last year my low was minus 26. For ten years the warmest low max has been minus 8. That area just gets cold and I believe the true state record was probably up in that area in 1948 but there just wasn't any meters.
I am guessing the coldest part of the state is in some valley near Remmel Mountain

2024 joins 1950, 1955, 1964, 1968, 1969, 1989, and 1990 as the only years to have a high of 22 or lower at SeaTac

My son has told me the best snow conditions are at 28 degrees or lower. Getting surprisingly close up there.
He just told me they are in the warmest place in WA state and it happens to be at 7.000 feet. Pretty interesting.
That's insane just 10 miles or so away at Chinook Pass it is -15

KSEA is not gonna hit the single digits at this rate. Bummer.
I thought it had a chance when it quickly dropped to 15 but not anymore, 16 currently
