Probably going to be massive power outages today. At least for places where lines aren't underground.
Not gonna effect us down here in the south valley. No way. Not a chance. I'm definitely not running the dishwasher or washing clothes.

There will be a few thousand kids that wake up this morning and think it has snowed. Only to find out that there is only a thin layer of crappy sleet and slippy ice.

Yeah it just started snowing here, -1 degree snow, really fluffy!
Snowing at negative zero temperatures in Oregon happens all the time. Yawn.

If it's currently sleet in the mid valley and stays that way for another hour, it seems unlikely it will convert to zr. I'm probably just wishcasting...
Sunriver is about to get destroyed! Hope you have the right vehicle to make it back.

Yeah, that's why it's nice to have live reports from local weenies.
I wouldn't be awake for the last couple of hours if i wasn't a weenie. I thought there was a slight chance of a snowflake falling and there was no way I was going to miss it. Turned out to be a turd sandwich.

Well the airport is officially reporting freezing rain.
The EUG airport has been reporting snow through their crapasss automated system for at least the last 30 minutes. It's all lies.

Good news, the NWS Portland is saying the front is slower so it could stall. So they have increased snow totals. 6”-12” for a good portion of the Metro area. Looks like they think Battle Ground will be the big winners.
If that means extra freezing rain for my area than I might kick a puppy.

It is turning white all around here for the most part due to the sleet. At least when everything is completely ice cubed it will look pretty.
I can't find my yaktrax anywhere

Precip type has changed from freezing rain to sleet. 28 degrees. Pavement is starting to get icy. Only more category to go and it'll be snow. lol fat chance

29 degrees. Precip has noticeably picked up. Everything other than the pavement has been ice cubed. My car won't be moving anywhere anytime soon. It would take some effort to dethaw it. Fuckkk. Pavement and puddles are still ice free though at least.

30 degrees with light freezing rain. Everything elevated has a nice glaze on it, but the pavement is still clear. A couple of degrees colder would be a problem.

Haha I’m just assuming we will. Have the batteries and generator ready to go, but could be scary for a lot of folks. I’m not sure most people understand what’s coming with the wind chills.
I've been scheming for a good way to save everything in the fridge. I think that if I put it in a cooler and then put the cooler outside, that might work (to keep it above freezing). It probably won't be cold enough to save the stuff in the freezer though. Looks like I'll be firing up the grill in the cold.

I took a walk around the neighborhood to survey the risky trees, branches over powerlines, etc. Did not look good. I think there is zero chance I'll have power if we get over an inch of ZR. It looks totally sketchy.

I saw plenty of diamond dust in Dec 2013 when the temps were slightly above 0. And yes, that does feel nice to say.

When was the last ice storm to drop an inch or more? Last time I can think of one down here was like Dec 2016? Good lord over 7 years of tree limb growth.
Godspeed...
I get them all mixed up as well. I try not to remember them too much. Dec 2016 was probably it, but we've had at least a couple since then. I believe we had one last year that was super slick but didn't get thick enough to cause damage. Maybe a .33 accumulation.

I already had my mother in law pull her car all the way into the carport. dumba** neighbor's tree overhangs the driveway badly. Should be illegal.
In the last big ice storm, my next door neighbor had a large limb from a tall Doug Fir crash through his truck's windshield. He has since removed the offending tree. Ice storms are no joke.

A reminder to anyone living in the south valley: Do NOT park your car under a tree. Also, anything else you don't want squished should probably be in the clear.

Good to know we aren't the only ones having awful snow busts. Chicago had a Winter Storm Warning today and the storm tracked way North from modeled and it's been basically all rain.
Seidel is out there live in the rain right now on the weather channel. lol

This is gonna be some weird f*****' dynamics in the SE valley.
Despite what the models say, I bet we at least see a few flakes in the next 36 hours at some point.

Ice storm warning for the south Valley. NWS calling for .5" of ice accumulation. That wouldn't be terrible. An inch would.

Yeah...radar down here is nonexistent. Unfortunately the northern portion of "The Empty West" is pretty much a forgotten part of the country in terms of weather.
Good news! There's many details that aren't in the article such as who will have access to the data and if they will partner with the NWS, but a private company is adding 4 dopplers to Oregon.

January 2024 Weather in the PNW (Part II)

Me too, although I'm not exactly sure how to deal with sleet. Eugene usually only gets freezing rain or snow.
I'm gonna hope for the best. I'm sure the modeled ZR amounts won't pan out. But even if they did, I'll be fine. I love camping and have supplies for days and warm everything that would be needed.
