I think we will be a cold mode on average until a Nino emerges now.  We finally managed to flip it.

The future hasn't happened yet. We'll see. A cool la niña spring is pretty common. There's no guarantee it continues throughout the summer.

No doubt we just finished a region wide cold April.  Monthly departures in Western WA and OR look to be commonly in the -2.5 to -4.5 range.  Looks like WA was about a degree cooler than OR on the departures.   Just wish we would get more NW flow and less gloom.  No doubt the Dec - Apr average is reasonably chilly for many places.

NW flow is gloomy here. All that unstable air leads to clouds and convection. We need NE flow or a strong ridge of high pressure.

  3. Looks like a deep trough next weekend. KGEG might be able to sneak a 70 degree high this week. It has not hit 70 since October 5th, 2021. I have a feeling summer will start late and leave early this year. I bet you that all the transplants are regretting their move to Spokane. This is a classic Spokane spring. Keep that winter coat handy and make sure the heat is on.

So I should just keep growing my tomotoes inside all summer?

I was being facetious. I grew up in the 1980s and just about all the summers were cooler than average and wetter than average. I saw the coolest July on record in 1993 and the coolest June on record in 1991. So we don't have to go very far back to get pretty cold in the summer. I think something closer to average is pretty likely this year. Something similar to 2019 seems about right. That's just my guess.

You're right about that. I moved from western WA (about ten mins from MossMan) at the start of July to Lewiston, ID and we had a really mild summer with the exception of a week of smoke and maybe two or three days of 105 plus heat which is not bad for that area. It didn't get hot until August and then quickly cooled. Slightly higher at my current location but it was mild there as well and I see it was yellow so about the mean.

Summer 2020 was a late bloomer, but September into early October was pretty nice, minus the apocalyptic wildfire smoke in September.

Yeah that’s true, had a few days like that on my visits. I should’ve said *almost* always.

Or sometimes the breeze will turn on *very* late in the day, like 4-5pm, so the majority of the day is unbearable but there’s some last minute relief.

And yeah, the days without the sea breeze almost always have big storms. I remember an incredible lightning barrage in one case..literally 1-2 CG bolts and simultaneous thunder every second. Scared the s**t out of me at the time (I was 12 or 13 years old). Only other time I experienced that was in July 2008 here at home. Really want to experience another one of those.

We never got the sea breeze at Ft Stewart. It was nothing but popcorn variety afternoon thunderstorms, which did little to alleviate the tropical heat.

You cannot beat early spring in the south.  Those first sunny days and all of the landscaping in bloom...March into early April.  I always get incredibly homesick watching the Masters.

Good old Savannah is hard to beat in March and April. I remember arriving at Ft Stewart in February of 1997. I was with another guy from Portland, Oregon, and I'm from Spokane. Temperatures were in the 70s and 80s. Neither one of us had ever experienced anything like that before. 😁

  8. Sunday's weather looks good for the Lilac Bloomsday race. We get some beneficial moisture tomorrow and Monday. We could definitely use the rain. Then some nice weather returns in the middle of next week. Spokane may finally eclipse the 70 degree mark. Spokane Valley already reached 70 degrees in late March. It's nice to see some spring weather for a change.

Lol. Not in the warm season. ;)

The Pacific is the “cool” air source now. In January it’s a warm advection source, which I’m sure you’re all aware of…cringe

Yep, the ocean is now colder than the land. Lots of cold, unstable MP floods us in the spring and early summer. May 1955, May 1975, and May 2011 were all colder than average. The saga continues this year. Maybe we'll follow 2008 instead.
