Thx Jesse and FS. It's just such a weird pattern. I wanted to know what you guys were thinking. I'll keep checking back as JUL winds down to see if summer comes in AUG this year.

Oh yeah. Ick. I thought that was pic was from today.

I'm no Forum Fantastic, but I've had my account since 2014. I guess they go by how often you post.

Nice pic, TT.

What are we thinking about August? Anything? Thinking about baked Alaska and how odd the weather pattern seems.

For whatever it's worth, probably nothing, I'm beginning to be a true believer of an El Nino later this year.
Odd configuration... you can see the weak Nino forming in the ENSO regions but its uniformly warm to the north of the ENSO regions and cold to the south.

Thank you Jesse and Phil for answering my earlier post about the UK heat wave. It was crazy time at work for a few days or I would have thanked you earlier. I’m sure you were on pins and needles.

Slightly off topic, but has anybody been tracking the UK heat wave (at least by their standards)? I’ve never seen anything like it this early before, and I can’t help but wonder if it has anything to do with the summer set up out here.

To be fair... PDX is at 3.10 inches for April which is about 200% of normal. Its not like its been dry down there this month.
PDX is also just about normal for the rainy season and for 2018... within a inch of both.
And Salem is at 4.68 inches for April... which is exactly the same as SEA. Salem is also above normal now for the rainy season and for 2018. This is also the 7th wettest April ever at Salem... with a period of record going way back to 1893.
I would say there has been no north-south gradient at all this month. PDX has just been a little drier than Seattle, Olympia, and Salem.

Over the weekend, Mark Nelson mentioned how wet Salem has been this month, also comparing to Portland. It's 40 degrees right now. There are some nice days coming, though.
Unless we're going into a Nino, I don't see a super hot summer this year. For reasons, not science.

EPS is even colder than previous runs in that period.
It also really warms up fast across the entire West in the 10-15 period.
The warm up makes me think we could be evolving into our summer pattern. I know it’s too early to know anything, but it seems like it might be. Also, isn’t tornado activity up during a La Niña, even a week one? There just aren’t aa lot of sign for that at all.

It was amazing when I was out there last July. It was actually somewhat cool/crisp in the morning, and the evenings were right around room temperature with no humidity to speak of. And the air smelled so clean. Also very few bugs compared to here.
Easily the most amazing summer weather I’ve ever experienced. It felt like early/mid October does here, except the days were long enough that it felt like summer.
You've seen our summers. That's good b/c the rest of the year kinda blows out here. You probably already know that, though. I used to work for Congress, and had the opportunity a couple of times to be in DC in JUL and AUG. No wonder they shut down in AUG. It was awful.
Any thoughts on the summer yet, or still too soon? I remember Bastardi said once that you can often see the summer pattern starting to set up by mid APR.

Really is an amazing psychological phenomenon, at least for me. I love the later sunsets..it puts me in a much better mood for some reason.
It’s one of the few things I love about summer. Nothing like walking around outside at 9pm in broad daylight.
For me, it's summer mornings. They are so clear and quiet, and it's just warm enough to be outside and be comfortable. And I love the sound of sprinklers. Summers are almost perfect in the PNW. Thankfully, we don't deal with humidity out here the way you guys do on the east coast.

Big rain shower here now, just a bit too warm in the lowest level. I bet 500 feet up or less it's really pretty.
I'm right at 500 feet in Salem. It's been snow here this morning. Sometimes it sticks. Sometimes not so much.

I'm learning alot just by reading this fourum. It's very exciting.
Me, too. It's really interesting. (Both the weather AND the snark. )
-
Well, no matter what happens it's been really fun reading through this. Of course, not as fun as cold and snow would be, but you know.... Good job, you guys.
-
What is the main thing you guys are watching for at this point? Just wanting to make sure all the models are in agreement?
-
Good stuff, DJ. Thanks. And with Tim on board what’s not to like?

Feel your pain?FYP.
I know what you meant. . If anybody knows what it is and feels like sharing, that would be ab fab—-as my Brit friends would say.

She’s a b****. Could it be something else, though? Like a Greenland block or something?
-
So, what is holding this pattern in place and preventing change? What is the straw stirring the drink, so to speak?
-
Nice to have 50+ dewpoints back.
Feels like Baton Rouge!
It is so disgusting. Ughh....
-
TT seriously. Why do we get the FB garden page? What's the correlation here?
-
Well it feels like the last several summers have been the hottest since I moved here in 1989 so I'll be shocked if it's not another inferno here.
If we were going to transition to an El Nino, I would totally agree. I just feel like this summer is going to be cool and kind of gross. And since I can't read models, that's all I have.

You just got on Dewey’s s**t list.
Ruh-roh.

I have been reading about the polar vortex and thought things might be getting interesting. I wanted to say hi and hope y'all are doing well!
