The volcanism idea seems to have some merit. I've heard of 'the year without a summer' following the eruption of Krakatoa in Jakarta. If volcanism played no role in that winter, and was solely due to atmospheric dynamics, how come there hasn't been a winter similar to 1861-62. Was the atmosphere just seriously out of whack of something?

Anyone know what mechanisms that were in play which drove the winter of 1861-62 to such awesome-ness?
