That PA announcement translated said “Haha Pacific Northwest United States, we have already kicked your a** in the snow department”

Lol close. It was just announcing the stops the next intercity train that was coming to our station was going to.

There was a track issue near Alvsjö so some stuff got rerouted thanks to literally a dusting of snow.

How does snow mess up transit in basically the arctic? It's like there being now snow plows in Anchorage.

I hate September so much. Wouldn’t shock me if 95-100°F sticks around beyond the fall equinox this year.

Will be living vicariously through you PNW people. Just like I do every year in S/O/N.

Just move over here already Phil. Then you can complain when it's 80 degrees with low humidity like the rest of us :)

It was a nightmare scenario for the Seattle area last October given where that fire was located.

Yes...a nightmare scenario for Seattle -.-

Driving to my home for a month looked kinda like driving into the gates of hell lol

Edit: anyone know what happened to Snow_Wizard? He hasn't been on since April. I know summer ain't his bag, but I've never seen him bail on this place for so long.

Don't know about y'all but food is so expensive now that I haven't been able to afford it. I was very lucky that someone took me on vacation because it was the best I've eaten in a while.

Most days I just don't eat anything. My wife makes too much for me to be on SNAP yet it's still not enough to afford much of any food after we pay bills and I can only work a max of 20 hours a week on disability and no one has hired me yet. I just let her have what little we can afford because she has to work. I'm grateful to have lost a lot of weight from this though. People are saying I look thinner which is good but I don't tell them why.

The local food banks are out of food whenever I go there, which is where the SNAP person said to go after I was denied and asked for suggestions as to where to go to eat something.

Anybody else just stopped eating because it's too expensive?

I feel you. I clear 6 figures for my family, so no assistance will ever come my way...but my food bills are up 3x. I have 2 kids I'm trying to feed and one of them is on formula.

Add the 3x price increase on food, I'm also paying more than double in gas costs compared to 3 years ago.

I'm about at the point where I just...skip eating sometimes. COVID gave me the gift of being massively overweight and high blood pressure, so maybe this is a blessing in the disguise.

Praying for you, your health and your family however. I know your road is tougher than most.

Not if the only two contestants were Oprah Winfrey and a homeless white man living on the streets in Los Angeles. If we are to focus all our efforts on poor Black women just because they have more intersectionality points, we'd be ignoring the poor white males.

Maybe I should have said most problems. I don't want to bring up the "M" word again, but there was one famous guy who said if were we to transition from capitalism to socialism to communism, all greed and selfishness would disappear and everyone would be happy and share everything.

But back to the whole equality vs equity thing

    image.png.76054fe7aa3455fa3aab243382916816.png

Most people on the left would prefer equity, some even if we had to violate equality under the law to achieve it. In fact, most people on the right would probably prefer equity as well, but conservatives don't believe in "stealing from the rich to give to the poor", and they also don't believe true equity is possible.

Or as one guy says "What the short man needs is to develop skills, find a useful vocation, and buy a ticket to the ball game. If he needs help (counseling, education, job skills, etc.), your organization and others like it provide services that can change his life. Getting him another box will not."

He also says "The equity cartoon envisions a world in which all heads are at the same height, a metaphor for communist-style redistribution of wealth. Communism levels wealth, but saps the human spirit and makes everyone downtrodden. Society, from top to bottom, lives a lie"

Finally he says that equity violates the Constitution (equality under the law) as well as human nature (people value dignity, honor and respect) and is not doable (also partially due to human nature) and instead we should strive for excellence.

    https://www.allsides.com/blog/equity-vs-equality-political-rorschach-test

True equity is not possible without a totalitarian government.

True equity is not found in nature, and there's no equality of outcome without the suppression of people's inherent differences. Whether that be intelligence, conscientiousness, drive or any other myriad of factors that go into people's desire to succeed.

It's almost like everyone forgot what happened in the 20th century. We've run this experiment about a dozen times, and all we have to show for it is nuclear proliferation and about 100 million dead bodies.

In fact I did. The text of what passed the Legislature is right here:

    https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2023-24/Pdf/Bills/House Bills/1240-S.pdf#page=1

It clearly targets certain types semiautomatic rifles.

Sure it lists "only 50", but it also explicitly bans any semi-automatic rifle that "accepts a detachable magazine" (i.e. all of them) and:

    - has a telescoping or folding stock

    - has a non-firing grip, either in a handle variety or a grip on the barrel

    - has a silencer, suppressor, or anything that lowers the audible nature or visual aspect of firing the weapon

    - has a pistol grip (that's like 20% of all manufactured rifles right there)

    - a thumbhole stock

    - a overall length of less than 30"

Then because that wasn't enough, it also bans any semi-automatic rifle with a fixed magazine capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

This is effectively a ban on all semi-automatic rifles and several hanguns and shotguns as well.

Prompted by this discussion, I have been reading the text of the bill and it is not an all out ban of semiautomatic firearms. It is a ban of certain types of semiautomatic rifles (so-called assault weapons or assault rifles).

Incorrect. It bans specific features that rule out almost all semi-automatic rifles, several popular semi-automatic handguns and shotguns. It also bans specific parts for maintenance of already owned firearms. Not only that, but there's a long list of specifically targeted firearms that are being banned.

Seriously did you actually read the bill?
