Looks like the non event we were expecting.

This was never going to be an event for the valley. Especially down south. I'm pretty embedded into Eugene as my home so I will not likely ever leave. I've reached the conclusion that I need to get a better snow car (have a shitttty front wheel Camry that isn't terrible, but not ideal). There are some nice destinations less than 2 hours that are extremely snowy. Crescent Lake has great places. Odell Lake has a nice lodge and cabins. Diamond Lake has some rustic, fun cabins. I'm thinking of maybe buying a partial cabin ownership with some friends when my financial situation gets a bit better. Some of the lakes have great summer and winter activities. It's one of the great things of living in the PNW.

Mark Nelsen did a great job of documenting in real time how the Portland NWS was out to lunch. He appeared offended by their stupidity.

Mark Nelsen is the best forecaster in the state, at least for the gorge, Mt Hood and PDX. He misses far less than the NWS and always explains his thoughts.

The crown jewel of the Washington Coast in terms of scenic beauty is the wilderness coast on the Olympic Peninsula up to Cape Flattery. It’s not as accessible and thus doesn’t have any bumper car rinks or saltwater taffy shacks, but scenery wise it’s right up there with the Oregon coast. Honestly though I love both, and comparing the two is sort of pointless.

Olympic National Park is a complete treasure. When I was quite a bit younger I took a 20+ mile hike on the coastline which was incredible, but not exactly what I would call good beaches. The scenery was top notch. To end the hike, we had to go through a couple of miles of rain forest with massive trees. Good memories, but much of the rest of the WA coast is kind of disappointing. My grandparents that lived in Bothell would come down to the central Oregon coast every year to experience the gem that it is.

Then you are limited to that one lake without a big ordeal.    And its still a long haul for the day.

It's a huge lake. Many arms to explore and enjoy. When you get back, there are (were) multiple restaurants and bars to enjoy. It was the source of great weekends which I still look back fondly upon. It definitely isn't a day lake from Eugene. But there are others like Fall Creek Reservoir that are still real nice.

Detroit is really coming back now. Great to see people rebuilding. And nothing beats a lazy day fishing on the upper north Santiam.

Done that multiple times before boating was available. There is a large park on the North Santiam fork with a ton of picnic tables and good fishing. I like the one on the Breitenbush fork better though. Caught many tasty planters there.

Im hoping to do the 187 mile Willamette River kayak float soon. Maybe not this summer because I’d like to get my experience level up a bit, I prefer rivers to lakes personally. Kayaking on a lake can be nice but you have to worry about the Tim and Randy’s of the world not noticing you.

I've kayaked for 20+ years, but mostly whitewater. I've also had my eye on this trip. There are plenty of blogs and guides about where to camp, get supplies, etc. out there. I'll do it one day before I get too old.

Seems like that would be the best option down there.   But climbing uphill into the mountains with a boat seems tedious for just having some fun on the water on a spur of the moment.   We can be at launch on Lake Sammamish in no time and being centrally located we will have people just meet us there and doesn't require planning your entire day around it.   Definitely wouldn't be the same down there.

That's why you leave your boat at one of the two large marinas. Not mine, and it it is a good deal to have your best friend owning a nice boat and cabin (before it burnt down).

Puget Sound is cold for sure.   Detroit Lake is a haul and its not natural.    Water is all around us in the Seattle area.

Detroit lake is super clean at least and probably in the top 3 of boating destinations in Oregon. The drive wasn't too much of a burden when my buddy had a cabin there and we could stay for a couple of days. There is a back country route from Eugene that is a terrific drive. Unfortunately the cabin is gone now due to the fire and I haven't been back much since. The town is rebuilding nicely though and I hope to spend more time there soon.

I don't think Seattle is as unique for boating opportunities as @TT-SEA thinks. Other than the Sound, it is similar to many other places. Including big cities like Dallas, Tulsa, Houston, Nashville, Austin, etc... The list really goes on and on. Even Eugene.

Most of the waterways up there are freezing other than the urban ones that have plenty of asphalt runoff and unclean crap. I'm looking at you swimmer's edge Green Lake. I've been to Detroit Lake many times when the temp was over 72 degrees and once it was even 77 degrees and totally clean.

They were always so grateful and happy to not be stranded, I never asked for money but everyone always offered and I never turned it down lol!
Even though I am inching closer to 50 I still love hitting the water on my old jetski! This was just a few months ago but it seems like a year now lol. Looking forward to another season of fun (once snow is no longer a possibility)

The general rule if you aren't a ****** is to help out any boater that is in trouble. I've helped some people that were stuck snowmobiling and the look of gratitude they gave me is indescribable when I helped them get free. They were so grateful. I generally feel that those are some of my favorite memories on the snow. A dude even gave me a 6 pack he had in his cooler because he was in total relief. I didn't turn it down. Boating is no different.

I used to make good money as a kid on the weekends at our family lake house towing broken down boats and jetskies with my little fishing boat (pictured) it was great!
Our friend buying the place has his captains license and a lot of salt water experience including sailing from Florida to the Bahamas in various weather, they also took their very large catamaran from here in puget sound and sailed it all the way to Cabo…so that family has seen a lot and is quite prepared for on the water emergencies. They are just now getting into the lake thing.

Ha! Imagine the embarrassment of being towed in on a nice jetski or boat by that thing (btw, I would love to be able to play around with that as a kid). The bro that took me in was on a jetski/waverunner, so I've loved them ever since.

Our long time friends/neighbors ask us to go with them since they are buying another summer place this time on Lake Whatcom and wanted my expertise on which lake boat and jetskis to buy. I’m probably not the best person to ask since my boat is 30 years old and my jetski is 20 years old! But it will be fun to shop with someone that has no spending limit lol! My wife has already given me the disclaimer that our old boat and jetski are just fine AND WE ARE NOT BUYING ANYTHING!!! 😂

Just be prepared for breakdowns/emergencies. This isn't the same thing, but when I was a teenager, I couldn't quite figure out windsurfing and sailed out into the middle of a large lake and couldn't figure out how to get back against the wind. That was one of the shittttiest days of my life. Fortunately, some cool bro eventually saw my predicament and helped me out.
