  1. 0.07" in the gauge this morning for the first measurable rain in 40 days. That would appear to be a record dry streak for the time of year, if I'm reading the data correctly.
  2. Payback at Hour 384 of the GFS with Eugene at the bullseye of the only negative height anomaly in the U.S.!
  3. 86º in Eugene today for a +12º departure from normal and +8º over-performance compared to forecast. Easy peasy.
  4. At least we know the Euro is consistent across locations. It routinely overdoes precip amounts here by a substantial factor, even on the day of the event. I can't seem to adjust mentally -- I'm always excited by how much I'm supposed to get, and always disappointed by the ensuing under-performance.
  5. Came home to Eugene and it's 87º at my house. That's warmer than anything I encountered in 2,000 miles of travel through all of California's major climate zones except the low desert.
  6. It was a Weather Weenie Wonderful day coming up Hwy 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra today. At 4,000 ft. in Bishop it was 77º. At 8,000 ft. at Conway Summit it was 37º. How's that for a lapse rate? At the summit was some of the craziest weather I've ever been in. It was pouring rain as hard as I've ever seen in my life. And hailing. And snowing. And thundering. I was much too busy driving to get any photos, but I did take this one at Grant Lake that shows some of the brooding skies. Currently in Reno and it's pouring here now too. Fun stuff.
  7. Some really nice buildups over the Trinity Alps in N. Cal today. Didn't hear thunder or see lightning but it was fun to watch the clouds develop. Gorgeous country. First shot is at 10:30 a.m.
  8. With peak fall smoke numbers routinely in the 500s and now peak spring grass pollen numbers in the 1,300s, we Eugenians have a hard time feeling much sympathy for the East Coasters complaining about a little Canadian wildfire smoke. Good thing I developed tough lungs growing up in inland SoCal during the peak smog years of the 1970s. Speaking of which, it amuses me when I see all the hysteria over SoCal air quality numbers that are at least 90% better than they were 50 years ago. These people have no concept of how much better they have it today. Oh... and get off my lawn.
  9. I'm impressed at the level of ego required in order to misconstrue Jesse's post as being about you. (Hint: it wasn't. It was about Mister Anti Marine Layer, who, along with creating multiple new threads about CA's persistent chilly pattern, also complains incessantly about it on threads where it is off-topic).
  10. In the "silver lining" department, my neighbor's clear cut erupted with daisies. Not sure if they're native, but they're sure pretty.
  11. May finished here with an average of 73/48. Definitely my warmest ever, but the period of record is pretty short (6 years).
  12. 80º here, 81º at EUG. 12th 80º+ of the month at EUG. 11th here. Forecast was for 76º, so the overachieving continues.
  13. Yes, folks, it's back, by popular demand! Because we know how much you missed us!!! -- it's... SMOKE SEASON!!! Get ready for a nice, looooong visit!!!
  14. Oregon west of the Cascades has had no rain in nearly 3 weeks with temps up to 20º above normal. Grasses are already heading out and browning off several weeks early. I guess I have a hard time believing the soil moisture is "normal."
  15. Oops, didn't see this until after I posted the above.
  16. Warmest May on record would seem to be a lock for many regional locations if any sort of ridgy solution verifies for next week. Most stations are currently running around +6.0 for the month.
  17. I figured we'd have no trouble blowing well past the forecast high of 75º to achieve our 10th straight 80º+ high this May, and I was correct. Still 81º at nearly 6 p.m.
  18. 9th consecutive 80ºF+ day here, which I'm sure is a record for May. Forecast high was 76º but we blew that out of the water as usual.
  19. One thing I'll say for the heatwave is that it really brought out the native Oregon iris.
  20. GFS 850mb ensemble mean almost exactly normal. That's what I like to see. Be nice if one of those half-inch rain spikes could verify, too.
  21. Just another typical +20ºF departure day here. Ho hum.
  22. No convection here, but onshore breezes have cooled temps off from 88º to 82º. Feels nice.
  23. If the 95º at North Bend Airport (OR) holds up, it will be a new May monthly record.
  24. Really just posting on a weather forum about a highly anomalous weather event with no particular emotional connotation intended, although I do share your hope that it doesn't stay this way all summer.
  25. 80s all up and down the Oregon coast at 10 a.m. in mid-May.
