  1. How do you keep your tomato plants so green? Ours always start turning yellow/brown, spotted in August. By now most of the leaves are dead, even though there are still tomatoes ripening.
  2. I only had .72" last August... about a third of normal, so that's not hard to beat.
  3. It's still fairly dry up here. Not quite record dry, but I'm tracking 8" below last year.
  4. 42 here this morning; a bit milder than yesterday's 40.
  5. Only 62 here today, despite no rain and plenty of sun breaks... already down to 54.
  6. True; I did say that it looked fairly wet for WA, but not as wet up here (until Sunday).
  7. More like slowly meander through... and the coast looks wet Tuesday, but inland looks mostly dry until Wednesday.
  8. I guess it's more the coast that looks wet this week as that system spins offshore.
  9. This week is looking fairly wet for WA but not so wet up here... common theme this year.
  10. I know. My main point is that the last 30 days or so hasn't really played out like some people suggested it might, with the exception of the roughly 10 day period at the beginning of this month. There's no doubt we're transitioning into fall, though summer doesn't officially end for nine days.
  11. I don't know, but I have to say this has been a pretty decent stretch of summer weather, considering summer "ended" two weeks ago on this board. There were people on here saying we were likely finished with 90's a month ago. How many have we had since then at PDX? Four? I have to admit I didn't even expect PDX to hit 90 this month, but they've done it once (maybe twice depending on the next hour). It's a pretty easy bet they won't see anymore 90's after today, but harder to guarantee that we won't see anymore summer-like weather before the end of September.
  12. Wow, pretty chilly. Only got down to 47F here. Just had a heavy downpour... 3"/hr rates.
  13. Do SEA or PDX record sunshine? It seems like most stations up here have stopped recording it (likely due to cutbacks). It does seem like areas down there saw a bit more sunshine than we did up here, but I'm just basing that on my impression from the posts on this forum.
  14. My Vantage Pro2 keeps track of sunshine hours. May and June were both far sunnier this year than last, but July and August were much less sunny. These numbers are a little unscientific because my station doesn't receive full sun for about half of the day, but the station wasn't moved in the last several years and nothing really changed in its surrroundings. Hours of full sun Month 2014 2015 May: 97 129 June: 90 157 July: 148 107 August: 133 95 Total: 468 488 Jun-Aug: 371 359 What I noticed about this August is that we had few or no 100% sunny days, and those days that were mostly sunny often had a lot of smoke reducing solar radiation, so that might explain some of the reduction in hours compared to last year. I don't recall smoke being an issue at all last year.
  15. The Puget Sound area has been unusually wet this month, but it doesn't seem very representative of the region in general.
  16. Hard to believe but I'm still at under an inch of rain for the month. This storm was pretty lame in that department, and we almost entirely missed the storm that hit Seattle earlier this month. Normal for August here is just under 2".
  17. Actually, they hit 56 mph last December. The last time it was this strong was when they hit 60 mph on Christmas Day 2011.
  18. New August wind gust record for Abbotsford (YXX) of 58 mph. The old record was 39 mph. Records since 1944. There are trees on the roads throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Reports of 200K without power now.
  19. .45" of rain here since midnight... occasionally breezy. Rain has backed off now, looks like blue sky towards Bellingham.
  20. Not disputing the pattern is different, but seasonal change tends to be more gradual. As for today being the last summery day, that depends on your definition of "summery" -- if you mean 90's, then I agree. I'd say there a good chance we'll see another stretch of 80's, but even mid-to-upper 70's and sunshine qualifies as summery in the PNW.
  21. The troughing we experienced at the beginning of August had many people calling for a much different month than July, but that didn't exactly pan out. So I'd say it's a little premature to be calling this a major shift. I'm sure we'll still see plenty of ridging in September and October. We usually do, even if not anomalously so like the last couple of years.
  22. I'm only at .25" of rain for August, but it looks like we'll get as much as 3" in the final three days of the month and end up well above normal. It will certainly pad the stats to make it seem like a wetter summer than it's been.
