The Great Falls (TFX) Area Forecast Discussion specifically mentioned the threat of wildfires. Granted, they said they were not worried about fire activity 'at this time', but still extremely notable. I've never heard the possibility discussed in a Montana AFD in December before.
This "winter" so far has been incredibly dismal. Has 1980-81 or 2004-05 vibes. Guess we were due for a dud.
With that said, there were fire weather watches issued by Great Falls NWS as recent as December 2020.

Someone in my FB group posted analysis comparing both events maybe from a 500mb perspective, but that concluded the December 1990 was a more extreme event than 2021. I'm trying to find the exact comment.
Yeah when you’re looking strictly at air masses the 1990 event (I’d argue 1968 as well) stands out no doubt. There were a lot of low level players in June 2021. As for a straight two day anomaly standpoint though, the data doesn’t lie, it sticks out above the rest.

Actually the December 1990 arctic blast was the most anomalous event edging out 2021.
I think he's more referencing the actual anomaly not duration.
June 2021 had back to back days of 25+ degree (+29 on the 28th) anomalies where December 1990 never saw a 25 degree anomaly on any day.

From my view, our "window" this year is from Thanksgiving through the end of December then torch thereafter.

Thanks! We’re having fun with it. It’s not what we had planned even six months ago but the place will be pretty sweet. Backs up to a recently-closed golf course that’s been converted to a nature preserve. When it snows again in a couple years I should get some sweet snaps.
Oh that is really cool! And yeah, I'm sure you won't see any outflow until 2025 but something to look forward to!

As the crow flies we’re only about three miles from our old residence.
The whole thing is pretty sordid and kind of the result of what’s been a pretty weird and crappy year. It’s been a 2023 thing on the forum.
Sorry to hear that. Building a home can be very exciting times so hopefully you guys can find some joy in it while not being too overwhelmed!

Our foundation is in and framing starts this week! Hopefully we’ll get to test the lumber’s cold weather tolerance in the next 8-14 days!
It’s not coming.
That's exciting! Where did you end up buying land?

I just missed the typical October blast of snow/cold here and even though this winter looks like a dud overall I'm sure they'll still be a few more fun surprises! Nice to be back!
