Part I - January 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW
Meatyorologist replied to Timmy Supercell's topic in West of the Rockies
I'm going to be honest, I have no idea how the rest of this model run is going to turn out. Ludicrous cold and oppressive northerly flow, but NPac is unrecognizable on the 06z compared to the 00z beyond hour 140. -

Low that spawns the kick is weaker, this is likely going to continue the theme of a colder pattern, possibly being better than the 06z. Euro will bounce back somewhat by Wednesday. -

Here’s a little lesson: don’t get too worked up over the long range GFS. -

I like your thinking! Though unfortunately there is no way in hell the 12z will match the 06z run we just witnessed....or will it? -

GOA blocking is much more sharp. I'm usually not someone who likes to hype things up but this run is MUCH better than the 00z... in almost every way. (Still probably won't end up happening this way but fun to look at!) -

Large difference in how the 06z handles the first low. Doesn't intrude warm air into Canada as badly, brings forward arctic air by a couple hundred miles. -

What I'm liking about the 06z: General theme of a cold snap w/ potentially significant snowfall continues, along w/ reloads. Plus timing coming forward (finally). What worries me: That offshore ridge is getting scarily close. While it promotes blocking, it could also keep the trough progression too inland if it gets too close. It's been trending sharply closer, so I'd keep an eye on that. Playing with fire there. -

Work schedule gets me home around an hour before 06z begins. I can upload what appears if you guys would like, rather than staying up super late. Not really much else going on for me while sitting at home around 2am -

Eek. 06z has offshore ridge strengthening like crazy and cock-blocking the digging trough. Also blocking is significantly delayed. -

Low in NE Alaska is much weaker than 00z (991mb vs 985mb) and blocking seems more northerly. -

God these two runs are so similar, even at 90+ hours out. We really do take our improved technology for granted sometimes.
