  1. It definitely would snow if there was the moisture. Rule of thumb is that evaporation cools things to the mean of the air temperature and the dewpoint. For KBLI (temp 37˚F DP 12˚F) it would be about 25˚F.
  2. Which means Redding has seen more snow (and an earlier snow) than Seattle, Bellingham, or Vancouver BC so far this season.
  3. Been really blowing here in north Bellingham since yesterday evening, and it's not even to the strongest part of the event yet. Thankfully my part of town has 100% underground electric service, so unless a major transmission line comes down (possible, but unlikely) I'm going to have uninterrupted service.
  4. Fraser outflow has been ongoing since this morning, though until a half-hour ago it wasn't more than light breezes. Now it's starting to pick up a bit. Should be really roaring by tomorrow morning.
  5. Mount Baker and Golden Ears were stunning today with the fresh snow they just received.
  6. It was the best thing about living in Shoreline. Bainbridge sometimes benefited from it, but not nearly so much. I miss it, but I got to live in Fraser Outflow Central as a consolation prize for giving it up.
  7. Absolutely zilch in my neighborhood, but Bellingham is a city of microclimates and I'm well away from the Chuckanuts and down in the flats. The possibility of getting an overrunning event in about a week is enticing. But that's still clown range in my book.
  8. NWS forecast mentions "a slight chance of snow" for me on Sunday.
  9. NWS is now mentioning the s-word in my forecast for Monday night.
  10. Just read for meaning; Fred's posts are always literal and never ironic.

  12. Yikes! Look at all those isobars over the mouth of the Fraser Canyon.
  13. Been keeping an eye on the bcstorms.ca forums. GEM is showing an overrunning snow event for Whatcom County/BC Lower Mainland on the 1st. Some runs of it also show PDX getting an ice storm.
  14. At KBLI the temperature had dropped to 37˚F by 8:30pm, then the wind shifted to the south (i.e. from the salt water of Bellingham Bay). By daybreak it was 45˚F. Overcast with a few sprinkles this morning.
  15. Is it showing the area right on the Whatcom/Skagit border? That's the Chuckanut Mountains, a westward extension of the Cascade Range. They're not particularly high or spectacular mountains, but they can be meteorologically significant, particularly when there's Fraser outflow. Anyhow, if so, it would be the model forecasting snow at elevations above 500 to 1000 feet and possibly orographic influence.
  16. It's a vicious cycle. The main reaction for burning charcoal is: C + O₂ → CO₂ But there's also always at least a bit of: 2C + O₂ → 2CO Now, suppose you're burning charcoal indoors. That's already bad news because of the side reaction immediately above. But wait, it gets worse: you're consuming and depleting the O₂. Notice that the second reaction burns twice as much carbon for a molecule of oxygen as the first one. That means, as the supply of O₂ decreases, the second reaction eventually takes over dominates the first one.
  17. Got a map that shows what's forecast for Whatcom County in that time frame?
  18. Dec. 1990 will probably always be my personal gold standard for cold and snow events, because when it happened: Fate had me living at about the epicenter of the whole event, andI had only recently moved to this area and had no idea it could get so cold and snowy in Seattle. It was the sort of major heavy snowfall that I thought I had left behind. To make it even more memorable, I had to leave for Christmas break on a flight the morning of the 19th.
  19. Ah, 1990, the year I bought my first home. In Shoreline, right in the heart of PSCZ country. I said to myself, "Self, this is a mild climate. You won't need to buy a snow shovel here." Then Dec. 18th happened. I measured 14" in my front lawn.
