  1. From the above article. This says a lot. We're entering uncharted territory. I have no idea what may happen, but no doubt we may find out. "Dr. Ciaran Beggan, a geophysicist and geomagnetic specialist from the BGS, told FT that the movement of the pole has been “much faster” since the 1990s “than at any time for at least four centuries,” and that scientists “really don’t know much about the changes in the core that’s driving it.” With the pole passing the Greenwich (prime) meridian and continuing its race east, humanity is entering the unknown, scientifically speaking."
  2. Updated info. Magnitude: 6.7 Depth: 29.0 km Epicenter latitude / longitude: 6.62°N / 125.24°E (Philippines) Nearest volcano: Matutum (35 km) Primary data source: GFZ Estimated released energy: 7.1*10^14 J (197 GWh / 1.7*10^5 tons of TNT / 10.6 atomic bombs equivalent) [learn more]
  3. I've read 6.6 and 6.9. Either way, this was a strong quake in the Philippines 5 listed fatalities so far and a 3 story building collapsed. Numerous aftershocks https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2019/10/28/usgs-southern-philippines-rattled-6-8-earthquake/2492650001/
  4. Cold front moved through and when have 40* at 7 am. Heading for a high of 45*. Currently some drizzle in the area. We'll have a very chilly week in the 40's with lows at freezing.
  5. Front rolling through this evening. We had a High of 76* today but temps dropping to 40* tonight and a High mañana of 47*. Winds out of the NW 15-20 mph. Typical roller coaster for us.
  6. https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2019/12/12/iceland-blizzard-brings-mph-winds-up-feet-mountain-snow/ An exceptional winter storm hit Iceland with hurricane winds two days ago, delivering as much as 10' of snow in the mountains.
  7. Gorgeous day in North Texas. Clear, 61*, Calm @ 5mph. I’ll take a dozen of these.
  8. Gorgeous morning and sunrise in North Texas. 38* clear and calm. High of 59*. Just another day in Paradise. This doesn't do the sunrise justice. It was deeper red and purple and covered the horizon 180* Just awesome!
  9. Any opinions as to North Texas for Christmas? I have to travel north on the road that day.
  10. I can't imagine Craig missing a storm with you guys. Surely, he'll show.
  11. Did some checking and it seems this eruption was accompanied by a 5.3 quake at 29km depth. A small group braved the risks and retrieved some survivors from the island yesterday. They do not believe anyone remains alive. Currently, they are anticipating another eruption. White Island is NZ's most active volcano, so one has to ask why they allowed anyone on it with an eruption warning in force.
  12. In the initial reports they got the number of people on the island incorrect. Seems there were 47. Sadly, another fatality from burns today and many remain in hospital. One report I heard on the news this morning said that the volcano, had gone to a warning level 3 weeks ago and no one understood how tourists could be allowed to go onto the island. I think that may be the understatement of their career for those responsible for allowing the visit. Historically, this underscores the affect that volcanos play in history. People and cultures have been caught in the path of earth's activities since man walked the earth, and there are almost always severe consequences.
  13. It's very tough news this evening. Apparently latest numbers reveal 34 have survived. Numbers vary some. No other survivors are expected. Those that have made it are dealing with varying degrees of burns. Many with 90% burns are not expected to survive their injuries. Though no one has said anything I have spotted in the news, I believe this island will now be off limits except to volcanologists and instrumentation.
  14. This may help. Nov. is their driest month and they are in a drought. It does happen though perhaps decades between. https://m.traveller24.com/Explore/Green/watch-has-victoria-falls-really-dried-up-20191209-2 Cool to see it dry though.
  15. Front moving through. Currently 47*. Low of 36*. Expecting ~.75” rain. Meh, ...at least it’s rain.
  16. A webcam showed people (centre of picture) hiking in the crater just moments before the eruption. Officials are warning family members to be prepared for the worst. There are survivors, but numbers aren't in yet.
  17. Hard to believe they're talking snow tomorrow. Nothing to get excited about and our ground is much too warm, but we may see some flakes tomorrow as the front pushes through the DFW area. Big change on the way.
  18. The video taken close up is frightening. With upwards of 100 people on the island and 27 missing and 5 dead at this post. it's humbling that we are all at the mercy of forces of this planet which can be beyond our control and our ability to wrap our heads around quickly. New Zealand is a very active set of islands. The northern island has many volcanos and active sites. I visited a number of years ago and I was amazed at how the landscape reflects this heritage of Volcanic activity. It is also subject to active faultlines, as we saw at the Christ Church earthquake a few years ago. It will be interesting to see what new activity occurs in the area. This was said to be a release of gases not magma, but those affected don't care about that detail. The SE Asia area has been very active with quakes between 4 and 5's lately and you can't help but wonder what's next?
  19. Impressive run. This next Solar Cycle predicted to be like a deflated balloon. Fewer spots than this last one. Interesting times, folks.
  20. It is believed this eruption may have only been gases but it was a very large eruption for the small island. At this writing -27 missing, 5 dead. Video in article. Spokeswoman states there may have been 100 people on the island. I can't imagine being on an island with an eruption underway. Gases and ash covered the area. The island is near Auckland, NZ. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50708727 Video https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12292349
  21. North Texas is warm. 63* in DFW. Windy. 16-20 mph. DP 48. (Spring)
  22. In contrast to the heavy rain and snow in the European Alps. Check this out. Famous Victoria Fall is dry. Flip through the 8 photos at the top of the article. Remarkable. ___________________ https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/stunning-images-show-how-one-severely-dry-season-changed-the-worlds-largest-waterfall/640562?connatix=true Tucked away in south central Africa, and situated across the Zimbabwe and Zambia border, lies one of the world's largest waterfalls, a majestic sight that is an economic driver and prominent source of energy for the two countries. Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, is the most famous spectacle in that region and one of the most famous landmarks on the entire continent of Africa.

  24. Okla/Tx could text this in with one word. Boring. A sad 40% chance of rain with what they are calling a "cold front" on Tuesday. Otherwise, it's a yawner!
  25. Looks like Okwx will get his wish. I'm hoping Texas holds off till after Christmas. But the way things are, looking, we may get snow this winter in North Texas.
