  1. Proof that this will not verify. Once the dark bands move to your location, we can start to believe what we are seeing
  2. I used to tease my son when he would come home on a break from Bozeman and ask him if he was holding up ok with all the extra oxygen he was getting down here at sea level.
  3. That's awesome! Friend of mine had an old FJ40 Landcruiser with wipers that were operated via a combination of the factory switch and a some percussive persuasion (pounding the motor case with her fist.) It was all fun and games until she hit it just right one time and cracked the windshield. Very fun vehicle, and the very first purchase I would be making if I ever won the lottery. We had the doors off one night and got caught in a huge thunderstorm (this was in Atlanta). Got soaked but a very fun memory.
  4. '80 VW Scirocco here. I looked at a rabbit diesel but I wanted to drive something with a little pep to it.
  5. I put up my Christmas lights today, and it was nice doing it on frozen dry ground. Usually I am having to use chunks of 2x4s under the legs of my ladder so they don't sink into the ground. Saw one of the earlier posts showing rain moving into the area. That would certainly explain the balmy 38 degrees I am seeing right now. Usually in the upper 20's by now.
  6. You have to get up there where North County lives in Sumas, or in Lynden or Ferndale. Blaine does well too, it seems like they are always the first place to report snow when we are in a marginal event or transitioning to snow.Of course Glacier is as its name implies, and they definitely get snow in the marginal events. But its also a long ways from anywhere
  7. They have said more than once that this is the coldest Game Day ever. It is so open there where the campus is, you really feel any wind that is blowing. The game my wife and I went to his freshman year was in the teens if I remember correctly. We were lucky to sit in a section of the stadium that was sheltered from the wind.
  8. Yeah for sure. Bummed we never made it to a brawl matchup while my son was in school there. We tried to do a family reunion his freshman year since most of the family is either a cat or a griz, but we couldn't get organized. We said....That's ok, we will make it happen in 2020.
  9. College day day is in @Kayla's neighborhood this morning. It's a balmy 1 degree on campus this morning. 22 here, the coldest morning yet this month.
  10. That's typically my rule of thumb too but more often than not I only end up at the doctor if it is bad enough to keep me out of work for 3 days, in which case I am required to bring a doctor's note when I come back to work. It's only happened once or twice in the past 20 years. Now that I am working from home, it will be more about what you described than getting a note for work. As it is, I'm trying to decide if I really need to mess with FMLA for my wife's surgery. I'm going to go ahead and get the paperwork done, but I'm not seeing a scenario where I will actually need it. I have a work laptop, so I can sit on the couch 10 feet from our bedroom and take care of her without much in the way of work interruption.
  11. Bellingham has always been sketchy....there is a disproportionately large number of self-appointed speed enforcers here. There is also a lot of people who do not grasp the concept that the freeway on-ramp is intended to get up to freeway speed by the time you get to the end. I am regularly behind people who are still doing 35-40mph at the end of the on-ramp. I've even had people going that slow then STOP at the end of the on-ramp, meanwhile freeway traffic is zipping along at anywhere between 55 and 70. Add to that the fact that the freeway is shoehorned in so the on/off ramps suck. Bellingham has always been a popular town for people who work remotely, and it exploded during the pandemic. So, we now have a bunch of big city folks (lots of Californians) and their aggressive driving trying to co-exist with the native population. I have pretty much mastered the technique of laying back a little bit then giving my car the beans about 2/3 down the ramp and zip around the reluctant mergers. I leave enough room so that if there is no spot for me to merge, I can safely slow down and risk my life trying to merge at 40mph along with the fool in front of me.
  12. Yeah, I asked one of the shops what was going on (I was nice about it....genuine curiosity). He said it started with the global supply chain shortage, add to that a major jump in accidents once everyone started driving again. He said the supply chain situation is much better but still higher number of accidents compared to pre-pandemic plus the same labor shortage every industry segment is feeling.
  13. Just got even worse news....his car may not get fixed before February/March!
  14. Got down to 29 last night with a very heavy frost this morning. Beautiful day here yesterday. My son wrecked his new car yesterday (he was at fault, and by his own admission made a total bonehead rookie mistake) so he is back to driving his 22 year old, 300k mile Subaru to work. His new car defrosted the windshield really fast, especially compared to the old one, so one more way he is "paying the price" for his lapse in judgement with the heavy frost. He was not hurt, and the car should be fixable with front quarter panel and bumper damage. Afterwards he said "thanks for being cool about this" and I chucked and said "I'm being cool about it because its not on my dime"
  15. It is definitely a conundrum...thunderstorms and tornados are my thing....On a trip back to Georgia for my sister's wedding in the late 90's, I drove through a very wide swath of tornado damage, I think it was an EF-4. I was utterly fascinated by the destruction and could not get over how cool it was to witness the power of mother nature only to have a commercial come on the radio talking about a huge regional fundraiser for folks who had lost their homes/businesses, as well as the survivors who had lost loved ones. This was a very economically depressed part of the state and undoubtedly those survivors needed the money to bury their loved ones. As was stated above, people like us here on the weather forum can turn that interest and knowledge to try to help educate your friends and family. Look at Randy Small and his Whatcom County weather page. He was warning people about what was coming, and even got out there to help communicate the need for boats and life jackets. I had not heard about how quickly the waters rose, but that certainly explains the sudden urgency and panic to get rescue boats and life jackets into the area. Scary stuff. When we were trying to move out into the county, I had previous flood maps up on one tab and Redfin up on another tab, looking at where the house was in relation to previously flooded areas. I have tried to guide friends who were home shopping the area with that knowledge as well. Sounds like your dad's a tough ole bird and a fighter, but I would imagine he is going to get a little twitchy the next time the flood waters come to the area.
  16. I don't think so, I think it will still flip, but by a much smaller margin than originally thought. I hope I am wrong, but then again it would be mildly entertaining to watch the Republicans self destruct with the endless pointless investigations they are threatening to do. And yeah, I think Dobbs did matter as well.
  17. Not sure that is anything to be bragging about. Walker is the exact opposite of what Republicans claim/pretend to be in terms of integrity and morality
  18. Winds are strongest I’ve seen since the start of this event, and of course this is when the zipper on my heavy jacket decides to crap out on me. Off to REI to get a new coat!
  19. Some of the East Indians bath in milk as part of their religious beliefs. There is a very large East Indian population in lower BC (in Whatcom County as well for that matter). I barely go to Costco any more, but when I was there more frequently you would see East Indian families with cartloads of milk. There was a video on you tube at one point that showed a pallet of milk getting picked clean in about a minute or 2. It was posted....8? maybe 10 years ago?
  20. You are going to pay crazy taxes in Canada and things are just more expensive. Living on the border, I can tell you that there is no shortage of Canadians coming down to Bellingham to shop eve now with a very weak CAD. It's not as bad as when the USD was weaker, but still plenty of Canadians showing up Friday through Sunday. I think gas in Vancouver is penciling out to about $7 USD per gallon. @Rubus Leucodermis could probably speak better about the cost impacts of living in the US vs Canada since he moved there in the past year. I would love to live on Vancouver Island, it has a nice vibe to it. There was a time that I thought Vancouver would be a cool city if I had to live in a "big city" but I don't think I could do it any more. I would also love to live up on the Sunshine Coast, but I would imagine home prices are insane there (I haven't looked, don't want to know)
  21. Been hovering around 29 pretty much all night. We got just enough snow to turn everything white, but it stopped by about 9:30 or so. Most of it has evaporated in the very dry air coming out with the Frasier outflow.
