  1. So I said I wouldn't post Grand Canyon pics on here...But...I ended up with some good ones. The clouds coming in last Sunday afternoon were very eerie.
  2. There are things I do not like/appreciate about this climate, but overall I can't really think of a climate I would prefer over the one up here in the foothills. One of the nice things about this location is the potential for massive snows. The last 6 weeks though a bit stressful were really fun. Obviously Central Oregon can get incredible snows, but it is a little to deserty for me over there. Spokane or the Wallowa Valley have great climates. Being in Flagstaff last week, they have a pretty great climate. Maybe a little dry for my taste though.
  3. It may delay spring growth a bit, but with mild days regardless it will just be typical seasonable variability. This year really shows how cold February/early March weather can delay vegetation. I have not seen one daffodil blooming yet and usually I see them in the valley by February 20th.
  4. Doesn't look like a total washout either, so I think Tim wouldn't mind it too much.
  5. Mean temp for the month through yesterday is 35 here. Average low including this mornings low has been 26.2
  6. The chilly lows will keep things from getting to crazy on the + departure side. Those are below average lows. My low of 33 this morning is the first above freezing low of the month.
  7. Yeah. In the valley. Places who had snow cover like The Dalles, Pendleton, etc... Will definitely have very significant departures.
  8. I saw the mean at PDX March 1-15 was colder than the mean in both January and December this year. The snow has kept things relatively colder up here even during the past week. Saw Pendleton ran like a -18 departure the first half of the month.
  9. Long range GFS still looks wet and cool. Interesting to see the GFS and its ensembles so at odds with the EPS. Beautiful sunny morning and 42 degrees after a low of 33. Snapped this pic of the back yard when I got up.
  10. Looks like I missed Dewey down in Arizona. Just got back this evening. Very nice trip, but glad to be home. The snowline has retreated just about to my place, but still quite a bit of snow on the ground up here. Some bare spots starting to emerge, but still 9" in my measuring spot and even deeper snow in the fully shaded spots. A little milder tonight, currently 37, just putting my stats together while I was gone, but it looks like pretty much all nights were below freezing.
  11. Perhaps. I never gave you crap for posting on vacation that I can remember. It's my wife's vacation anyway, I came along because I had to, trying to make the most of it. Yesterday was a decent day, Northern Arizona is incredible. This trip will go downhill fast when we go back to Phoenix tomorrow night. But first post in about 48 hours isn't bad. lol
  12. Went to the Grand Canyon yesterday. It's amazing, but it is kind of what you expect. Overwhelmingly massive on a scale that defies comprehension. Also I cannot imagine how busy it is in the summer. It was packed at the South Rim on a cold windy March day... Went over to Wupatki National Monument on the way back to Flagstaff. Really enjoyed the nice walk through the ancient Pueblos.
  13. Looks like The Dalles, Redmond, and Pendleton all set record lows this morning. Through the first 10 days of March Pendleton is running a -21 departure. 28/14 average. 8 sub-freezing highs.
  14. Another 0.6" of snow since midnight. Still coming down for now. 61.1" on the season now.
  15. Selfish hillbilly lol... Yeah, because a lot of Hillbilly's read memoirs about post colonial Africa...
  16. Santiam Canyon up towards Detroit Lake along Hwy 22 is just getting absolutely hammered with this snow band.
  17. Central and NE Oregon have warmed considerably the past few days, but they are still setting or tying many record lows. 18. Mark Nelsen said he picked up 5" in 3 hours at his house this evening. His quote from FB was "Dumb for March, but fun to watch."
  19. This snow band appears to be strengthening, but moving off to the south as it does. Looks like it will hit the Santiam Canyon and Sweet Home foothills pretty hard.
  20. Yes, he had a long history of that. Peter Godwin also writes about that in Mukiwa: A White Boy in Africa. He was essentially exiled in the 80s for reporting on ethnic cleansing carried out by Mugabe's forces trained by North Korean special ops in order to punish his political enemies. In When A Crocodile Eats the Sun he writes about his father's shocking admission to the family that he was not actually British, but a Holocaust survivor from Poland who immigrated to England as much of the rest of his family was sent to the death camps. After the war he moved the family to Africa in order to put that chapter of his life behind him (His wife knew his secret), towards the end of his life he reveals this secret to Godwin, who then explores these roots and helps his father find solace under the backdrop of Zimbabwe descending into chaos under Mugabe's madness.
  21. Maybe in Zimbabwe? Pretty astute of you to know about that though. If you have any interest in the topic I would encourage you to read. When a Crocodile Eats the Sun and The Fear by Peter Godwin. Mugabe will cast a long shadow over that land for quite a time.
