  1. Yesterday most locations seen one of the coldest maximum temperatures for June 13th At Grand Rapids the high of 64° is the 4th coldest for the date (records go back to 1892) At Lansing the high of 62° was the 3rd coldest (records go back to 1863) And at Kalamazoo the high of 60 set a new record for the coldest maximum their records go back to 1887. The high of 65 at Muskegon where the sun came out earlier in the day was 65 but still was the 9 coldest high for the date their with the records going back to 1896. All in all a very cold day for mid June.
  2. Here at Grand Rapids (and many other locations) 7 of the last 8 months have been seen temperatures below average. And the start of 2019 has see 5 months in a row of below average temperatures with a good chance that June will be the 6th in a row. As far as I can find that last time we started a year with 5 or more below average temperatures was in 2003, In that year only August, November and December were above average. So far I have recorded 0.61" of rain today and the temperature here is 55.
  3. Yes, It's June 12th and there is still some snow in Michigan. This is Mt. Ripley in Upper Michigan near Houghton. It looks like a sand trap on a golf course, but it's really snow. It looks like this is the only pile that's left here and it is shrinking. It's lasted longer than usual because of above average snowfall this past winter and a cool spring. The period of Jan. 1 - May 31 was 4.2° colder than average at Marquette. https://www.mtu.edu/webcams/ripley/ and here is a different view https://www.mtu.edu/webcams/ripley/
  4. The great lakes water levels are at or near record levels. For Lake Erie the level is 30” above average and 3” above the old record for June. Lake Superior is also at a record level for June. For Lakes Michigan/Huron the level is 29” above the June average but is still 2” below the all time June record set in 1986. This is mostly due to the cool temperatures and wet conditions we have had
  5. The forecast high of around 60 for tomorrow would make it one of the coldest highs for any June 13 at Grand Rapids. The record coldest maximum for June 13 it 59 in 1955 in second place is 62 in 1933 and in third place is 63 in 1960. Then it jumps to the mid 60's the average high is 79
  6. So far the month of June is running at -0.5° and looking at the next 7 days it sure looks very cool for mid June. The average H/L is now in the upper 70’s with the average low in the mid to upper 58’s we look to be 8 to 10 degrees below average for highs thru this week and there is no real “heat” in the long range. So there is a good chance that June will be the 6th month in a row of below average temperatures here in Grand Rapids. Here at my house I recorded 1.01” of rain fall yesterday. Slim
  7. Here at my house I recorded 1.01" of rain fall yesterday and overnight. No heavy rain during this period but just a steady off and on rain. The current temperature here is 63 with just cloudy skies at this time
  8. Just a few sprinkles so far but much more rain is on the way. The rain today is moving in from the SE not your typical set in our area. Today looks like it going to be a wet one. The current temperature here at my house is 64 with cloudy skies.
  9. I know it is June 3rd but here there is still snow in Michigan!!! https://www.woodtv.com/weather/bill-s-blog/there-s-still-snow-in-michigan/2047818430 and notice that the grass is still kind of brown and the leaves are just coming on the trees
  10. Here at my house I had a overnight low of 38° of course that is not official and will not count. The official low at Grand Rapids last night was 40° that make today’s low tied for 3rd place on the all time coldest lows for this date the record low is 38 set 4 times the last time was in 1977 and in 2nd place is 39 set in 1945 and then 40 set in 1956, 1946, 1929 and now 2019.
  11. I have not been to West Branch in many years. Back in the day I used to go there often there was a nice place to eat right were M 76 and M 55 came together not sure if anything is there at this time.
  12. I had 0.74″ of rain yesterday in 3 thunderstorms. It has been a while since our area has seen 3 thunderstorms in one day. The current temperature here is 56 with sunny skies. Cool temperatures in early June are not all that uncommon but that said the record low for Grand Rapids tomorrow morning is 38 that has happened 5 times with the last coming in 1977. so if Grand Rapids reaches 40 or below it will be one of the coldest June 3rds in recorded history.
  13. he 6 PM readings across Michigan range from 81 at several locations to cold 46 at Macinac Island. All locations in the UP are in the 50's Still waiting for Grand Rapids to report 80 it has been hanging on at 79 for a couple of hours now.
  14. At this time the sky is milky white here with a temperature of 67° Grand Rapids is still waiting for it's first 80° day.
  15. Here in Michigan almost all of the active weather has been to our south so far this year. That said it has been cloudy somewhat wet and cool in this area. Grand Rapids has yet to officially reach 80° this year. The latest first 80° on record is June 12 way back in 1924 and this year looks will be the latest since at least 1997 when the first 80 day happened on June 9th the average first 80° day over the years is April 30th and this year will join 1997, 1983. 1947 and 1924 as the latest date for the first 80 day.
  16. It has been a while since we took a look at some of the web cams from the up so here are some of them. https://www.mtu.edu/webcams/walker/ this next one is of Mt Ripley and yes that is still snow there. https://www.mtu.edu/webcams/ripley/ and this one of Lake Superior https://video.nest.com/live/kjMvMPX4Rb
  17. As of today here is the break down of 80° days at several official locations around the area. Grand Rapids 0 (the warmest so far is just 78) Holland 1 day (80 on May 28th) Lansing 1 day 81 on May 25th Kalamazoo 2 days (82 on May 18th and 81 on May 25th ) Muskegon 3 days (80 April 22nd 81 May 22nd and 80 May 18th) Grand Haven 0 days, Freemont 0 days Big Rapids 0 days. Other areas around Michigan Saginaw 0, Flint 1, Detroit 2, Alpena 1, Houghton Lake 0, Sault Ste Marie 0, Cadillac 0, Traverse City 1. So while several locations have had one or 2 days in the lower 80’s so far this year several others are still waiting for their first one. BTW the average first 80 day at Grand Rapids is April 30th the latest date is June 12th 1924. This year will be the latest since 1983 when it did not officially reach 80 at Grand Rapids until June 9th
  18. There is a good reason as to why the heat has been on but the air off so far this year. At this time Grand Rapids has only had 6 cooling degree days (CDD) this month that is already-23 and for the year GR has only had 6 that is -31. Now for Heating Degree Days (HDD) GR is at 237 (+19) for May and is now at 6662 for the year that is +239 so yes in our area we use the heat much more then the Air. And we have not had a lot of don't have to days yet either (that is dont have to have the heat on nor the air on) but we have had more in the last 10 days or so.
  19. Here at my house the totals are 5.07" for May so far. 4.02" April, 2.23" March, 3.43" February and 2.90" January' that is a total of 17.65" so far this year.
  20. Here are some midday temperatures from the UP Houghton 40, Copper Harbor 45, Marquette 46, Sault Ste Marie 48 Macinac Island 48. Not a great Memorial Day in Michigan's UP
  21. I hope everyone is having the best possible Memorial day weekend. It is now party cloudy with a temperature of 65. We went up to Bay City yesterday and boy is it wet up there. A lot of standing water and the rivers are high in their banks.
  22. It sure has been a wet May as Grand Rapids is now at 5.00" Muskegon is at 5.99" Kalamazoo is at 5.01" to the east Lansing has had much less rain and sets at 2.37" It still has not officially reached 80 or better at Grand Rapids this year. The high here at my house yesterday was 76 (78 at GRR)
  23. I had a low here at my house of 38. The official low for Grand Rapids looks to have been 39.
  24. The mean temperature at Grand Rapids is now at 53.4 that is a departure of -3.0° at Muskegon the mean is now 51.1 and that is -3.4° the warmest so far is just 70. At Kalamazoo the departure is now at -2.3. And it is -2.5 at Lansing. At other locations around Michigan Detroit -2.4° At Flint -1.8 and Saginaw -2.9° Up north Alpena -4.2° Gaylord -4.1 Traverse City -5.7° In the UP Sault Ste Marie -4.6° Marquette a whopping -6.7° and they have had a reported 5.8” of snow fall. And Houghton -4.0. And while it is a ski resort there is still snow on the ground at Mt Ripply (if you have not been up there you can see this from downtown Houghton) https://www.mtu.edu/webcams/ripley/ And while the grass is green the leaves on the trees are just starting to leaf out both at Houghton and Munsising to the east https://video.nest.com/live/KwoI4PahN5
