  1. 12Z GFS doesn't hold out much hope for anymore winter in most of Nebraska. What a disappointment it has been. Well below normal snowfall with some cold and lots of wind. I am so jealous of Chicago to the east and the never ending parade of storms. I guess if El Nino does come about for next winter we could hope for the southern branch of the jet to bring more storms, but I am always fearful that those will bypass us to the south and we will by high and dry for another winter. We need severe weather season to come.
  2. In other news Nebraska is going nuts right now with the basketball victory over Wisconsin. Not a basketball state but hope that is changing
  3. From Hastings NWS this morning, March 9. BEYOND: WE STILL SEE A CONSISTENT SIGNAL IN THE GFS AND EC ENSEMBLES FOR A PATTERN CHANGE OVER THE NE PACIFIC THAT RESULTS IN A WRN USA LONGWAVE TROF DEVELOPING AROUND TUE 3/18. THE EC CONTROL RUN AND EVEN THE ENSEMBLE MEAN SUGGESTS LEE CYCLOGENESIS WITH A CO LOW HEADING FOR THE GREAT LAKES. WE HAVE NOT SEE THIS ALL WINTER LONG AS THE PATTERN HAS NOT SUPPORTED IT. IF THIS HAPPENS...WE COULD HAVE POTENTIAL FOR SOME DECENT QPF. THE SHIFT TO A -PNA PATTERN SUGGESTS A PERIOD OF COLD WX TOWARD THE END OF THIS MONTH. We can only hope this comes true.
  4. That has now went way north on the 12Z GFS. Too good to be true as the Colorado Low has disappeared. It is now a South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota storm. Raise your hand if you have heard that said this winter. I sure have. I am fearful that this winter season will end with no Colorado Lows and at least for our area no Winter Storm Watches. I don't think I can ever remember that in my lifetime.
  5. I have really never followed the LRC but I am starting to believe it. Living in Nebraska we usually have a large March blizzard or large snowstorm. Some of our biggest storms in history happen in March. We keep waiting for a storm to bring us the moisture that is do desperately needed for agriculture. We are fortunate to have the Ogallala aquifer below which allows irrigation for some of the best soil on the planet. However, farmers must pay for this water that is extremely expensive. I am not a farmer but our community relies on farmers to buy products to keep the farm economy alive. This pattern is so frustrating as storm after storm goes around Nebraska. This is why Nebraskans on this board appear to be whining but actually are desperately wanting moisture. Thanks for letting me vent.
  6. The Nebraska snow donut hole, boy have we seen that this winter.
  7. I know. Nothing is on the radar but we have had visibility issues with falling snow and blowing snow. That is why I think if we get an actual band setting up with these cold temps it might add up fairly quickly.
  8. Snowing hard in holdrege now. If this continues until tomorrow we will have quite a storm.
  9. Hastings nws says blossoming snow later in central Nebraska could be robust, their words not mine. Still no mention of accumulation or advisories. They are so conservative with their forecasts that republicans should hire them to defeat global warming alarmists. If you can't tell I am not a huge fan of nws Hastings, but I keep checking there for a good laugh. they seem to always forecast low. Maybe they were burned in the past.
  10. Snowing and blowing in holdrege. Nws Hastings with no new advisories for this area is amazing. Probably put one out tomorrow when it ends.
  11. My prediction, nws Hastings will issue headlines later during snow. Always late to the party imo.
  12. Nws Hastings, as conservative as Reagan or Bush. Their map is comical. I don't know how every other office has headlines and Hastings has this void. Amateur meteorologists and weather geeks like us would see that this is unbelievable. If they are correct more power to them but it looks foolish to have this donut hole surrounded by color.
  13. Nws Hastings with there typical conservative approach. Winter weather advisories and watches all around the area. I guess snow will stop at one county line and jump to the next. They even say in their discussion 1-3 Saturday night and 1-4 Sunday. Yet nws goodland issues advisory for 1-3. Maybe they will be correct but it just appears to not make much sense looking at their website map.
  14. Nws Hastings says they are waiting to start issuing snow amounts for awhile but looking likely Saturday and Sunday.
  15. NWS Hastings and Goodland sure don't think there are any large storms coming to Nebraska. They mention cold and small precipitation chances over the weekend, but nothing like is showing up on the GFS or Euro. Hastings tends to be very conservative, IMO, so things might change this weekend. Really hoping for a large early March snowstorm but right now I am not holding out alot of hope.
  16. Looks like furnas, gosper, and Harlan counties were the snow winners. 8-9 inches within the persistent band. Winter wonderland here in central Nebraska. Haven't said that very often this winter. Just used the snowblower on the driveway, it is a fairly wet snow but it blows easily.
  17. Solid 4-6 inches in Phelps county so far, still snowing hard.. Got under a heavy snow band the last couple of hours. 1 inch an hour snowfall rates. Heaviest of the season. Will update when it finally ends. Sounds like more chances during the week and nws Hastings hinting at a large storm, possibly, March 1-3.
  18. Ground now covered in Holdrege. Heavy wet snow, east to northeast wind at 20 mph. Just added Phelps county to winter weather advisory for up to 4 inches with higher amounts based on banding. Hope to get some decent moisture from this storm. Not the fluffy type we have had this winter.
  19. Just started snowing here in holdrege. East wind blowing. Visibility probably 2 miles.
  20. I know. It can be so frustrating. I don't really believe it until I see snow coming down. Hope the different storms can give us all something.
  21. NWS Hastings says that this is a very difficult forecast for tonight into Sunday morning. Winter Weather Advisory along I-80 west from Grand Island. General 1-5 inches but said where frontogenesis sets up it could be 6-8 inches. Could be a very thin band. Counties may be upgraded to warnings tonight or other dropped from advisory. Described it as "SEVERAL SCENARIOS ARE POSSIBLE TONIGHT AND WE WILL REALLY NOT KNOW WHICH ONE IS RIGHT UNTIL WE SEE THIS UNFOLD." I hope Phelps County can be under this band.
  22. Nws Hastings has 2-4 with potentially nighter amounts where heavier bands set up. Hoping to be within one of those bands Saturday night.
  23. I am with you. Central Nebraska has had some of our largest storms in March. I remember March of 1984 and the double blizzards of late March and early April 1987. The 2nd one in 1987 put drifts over barns in the country around Phelps County. We could walk up onto our garage in town. I tell my kids of these type of storms and they don't believe that they can actually happen anymore in Nebraska. One of these winters we will get our turn (I hope).
