  1. I've seen that happen pretty often when there's just a trickle of cold air escaping from the canyon that just kind of hangs up at the border. In those cases, I've been buried in snow in Sumas, and just south of city limits it all just.....disappears.
  2. 5:30am wake-up call to deal with a frozen pipe at the side-hustle. Only one line was frozen, but as tends to be the case, it was the single most important one. First cold season in this building. Definitely found out which line is going to be our "problem child." Eventually it's going to get into the 20s and feel sub-tropical.
  3. Popped to 10° briefly this afternoon to bust an all-day single-digit attempt. Looks like we bottomed out at 3° and a -20° windchill at 9am, right when I was bringing my daughter to school and heading to work. My son claims his freshly-showered hair was starting to freeze when he ran out to start his brother's car at 7am....
  4. Not crazy strong by historic standards. I don't have anything in front of me to verify, but I seem to recall passing -20 a few times in the past several years. Probably offset the lack of snow cover in allowing the temps to fall a bit more in the blast zone.
  5. About to walk to the car in a minute. First time I've worn a jacket in probably a year. The kids didn't even now I had one. Tomorrow I might even wear gloves.
  6. It's a pretty good indication of the extreme luck needed to have all the moving parts align JUST right to allow the "generational" type of historic events to occur. One or two things just slightly off, and it all falls apart. (To be clear to our Oregon friends, I am aware that things falling apart for Western Washington might mean things aligning just right for Oregon. I'm not discounting what you get to experience this weekend.)
  7. I like it because it represents a break from the ordinary. If we got it frequently, I'm sure my attitude towards it would be much, much different. When I lived in Central and Eastern Washington, I barely paid attention to the forecast, rarely found myself "rooting" for snow, and generally found it to be a bit of a nuisance; cool to look at for a few minutes, but hated having to bundle up, walk up-and-down-hill in it, or scrape it from the windshield. But that's just me.
  8. Is it typical for your area to take this long for temps to crash? I know, water, and all that. But even in Bellingham I'm already seeing temps in the low 20s.
  9. Just stepped outside for lunch and saw a bank of dark clouds to my west. Radar shows this just kind of popping up out of nowhere to the west of my office (the blue dot) and moving slightly east. The 23° temperature bubble is at home. Will be interesting to see if anything develops out of it, or if it just evaporates in the outflow.
  10. Cruising through the canyon on Highway 1, windows down, waving the Canadian flag and blasting The Tragically Hip at full volume (RIP Gord Downie). Using the Huntingdon crossing to enter The States by sunrise.
