Oh yes, it's so "fun" to go into the fantasy range of models and look for cold fronts producing unfathomably cold air masses. Oblivious to the fact that IF such an air mass verified, an early killing frost would transpire; the growers and the economy would not benefit very greatly too. This, of course, will occur right after our late start to spring. -

Wow, people already with 240 GFS "output". That's pretty sad. -

Models keep showing warmth rebuilding by next week after this short lived cool spell coming up this weekend. -

most likely won't, just like the heatwave last week never verified (for the great lakes region). -

This is a non-event for north of I-80. -

This month was mostly an "up" month in terms of temperatures, definitely a change from July which was characterized by deep troughs. -

As with every warm-up and cool-down, it will be moderated. -

Would have been a true heat wave with multiple days in the 90's hadn't it been for all the convective activity. We've just been unlucky with the heat this year (or lucky if you want to look at it that way). Though August will most likely finish with a positive departure in terms of temperatures. -

The cooler air keeps getting pushed back. The warmth sticks around through Wednesday of next week. -

Yeah, your area has gotten very unlucky. All the other surrounding areas are running well above average in terms of precipitation. -

Long range GFS is continuing to show a nice ridge developing from the Midwest on east. Not sure where you're getting this information from. -

GFS/EURO long range are hinting at some sustained warmth for sure. The general pattern for this August looks pretty zonal. -
Why does everyone think that the cool down is a result of the PV? Just because there is a dip in the jet stream doesn't mean that it is a result of the PV. The polar vortex is a cold air cyclone in the far north that rarely makes its way out of the arctic. A 15-20 degree temperaure drop for a couple days in mid-July is significant. However, that doesn't mean that it's the result of the PV. It's just a surge of cool air from Canada due to a trough created by the typhoon in Japan. Guess every cool down is a result of the PV LOL.
-
Just want to get this clear; the upcoming cool shot is NOT a result of the polar vortex. It's just late season pool of cool air that'll be coming down to the US. Not every cool down is a result of the PV...
