Mark Nelsen said the arctic front is travelling faster than expected. When was the last time that's happened? I thought it was usually the opposite
This thing has got some pretty top tier depth to it.

This thing really trended colder down the stretch. Kind of a sneaker historic type airmass.
There is even a reenforcing shot coming here Sunday night keeping us below zero into Tuesday now.

Still going down even with the sun up. Now down to -29F.
Should break all sorts of record low highs and lows today and tomorrow. Even some all time record lows look to be in jeopardy.

Big sleet events seem pretty uncommon in the PNW but so are these kinds of events. We had about an inch of sleet on 12/20/08.
When recording for posterity is it okay to record sleet with snow totals? The NWS does.

Front passed through here about an hour ago. Moderate snow and -5F. So it begins!

I wonder how the native Americans in that area did during cold snaps.
Teepees are actually quite genius. Can keep a nice fire going while trapping in the warmth.

Can you imagine the life early settlers who had to be outside... must have been so brutal. We are all lucky to be living now.
It's honestly hard to comprehend. Huddle around the fire and never leave I guess!

What was the low temp for you then?
BZN hit -45F. My house hit -40F but my Davis is only rated to -40F so who knows!

Do you go outside in that? Do you have dogs?
Nope, only for very brief moments. Frostbite happens ridiculously fast in those temps, 5 minutes or so.
No dogs but I know the ones here take care of their business real fast before going right back inside!

New RDPS rolling out now... through tomorrow so far.
@ShawniganLake you say this model is good through 24-48 hours?? We will see.
HRDPS performs really well here. It's my go to for short term guidance.

Still dumping here and down to 14F. 3-4" already when the models predicted maybe an inch tonight. Down to 13F now. Just another example of how much the models struggle with this level of cold advection and moisture. Bodes well for you all with the Arctic front.

January 2024 Weather in the PNW (Part II)
in West of the Rockies

Looks like Two Medicine Bridge was the coldest in MT this morning at -40F.
Tonight outta be fun to see just how low we go! -40 in Bozeman looks like a good bet with some -50's in the usual cold spots of MT.
