And on the PDX side of things - Measurable precip has fallen on all but 2 days this month. This shatters the old record of 17 days of rain for October at PDX.
Similar story down here. 7.2" fell in the last 5 days of the month at PDX in 1994. That month also holds the greatest 24hr rainfall record at PDX of 4.44". Much different pattern this year.
Looking at latest models at satellite trends, 45-55 mph gusts for PDX area seems like a safe bet. Should still cause quite a few issues out there later today with the trees still mostly fully leafed.
Just incredible morning and unheard of for the area. Before this morning the Portland NWS had only issued 5 Tornado Warnings since 2005 and no more than 2 in one day. Today...10. Just amazing. Glad to hear no reports of injuries.
Not sure if these were posted earlier but these show some pretty substantial damage along the coast this morning. Judging by these photos I would guess EF2 tornado touched down in the town of Manzanita.
Upper level winds wrapping around a strong low pressure system as it pushes Northeast causing the front to negatively tilt. \ (negative tilt) / (positive tilt) Hope that makes sense!
McMinnville just gusted to 48 mph. We should start seeing some 40+ mph gusts within the next 30min in the PDX metro area with that incoming squall line.
The 170 from Hebo AFS was estimated because the reporting station there was destroyed after recording a 130 mph gust and the radar domes up there were destroyed that were supposedly rated up to 170 mph.
TMK just picked up 1.25" in the past 3 hours. Looks likely that we'll still see some 0.2-0.3" rainfall rates from 7pm-10pm which could add to this riveting mid October drama. 2.27"
PDX is up to 1.56" of rainfall for the day with the heaviest rainfall still to come. Can PDX squeeze out another 0.89" and snag a new record for the rainiest October day?!
60-65 mph wind gusts is still a dangerous situation this early in the season. We're still talking about big impacts region wide even with this run at face value.
Besides the wind factor, 12z ECMWF shows 1.2" of rainfall between 5pm-10pm in the PDX area tonight. Will be plenty of urban flooding if verified and would likely break the October rainiest day record.
Timing of the front was perfect for a 2"+ day. PDX has already broken their daily rainfall record with over a 0.6" of rainfall thus far. Wettest October day for PDX is 2.44" set in 1994. Definitely within reach today.
