  1. The 12z GFS shows a nice trough digging in over us just before the end of the month. It shows very cold anomalies for this time of year and also brings much needed rain to help put out the wildfires.
  2. PDX made it to 88 today. Tomorrow through Wednesday should be our last heatwave of the year unless the smoke gets too thick and keeps temperature down. The 12z EURO EPS PNA forecast today shows solid troughing later this week as a strong negative PNA signal takes hold.
  3. Here's what the air quality looks like right now for the PNW. The unhealthy air is starting to creep it's way west of the Cascades. From Cliff's new blog post today he thinks it's going to get worse through tonight and continue into tomorrow due to strengthening northerly and easterly winds. http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2018/08/smoke-now-pushing-western-washington.html?m=1
  4. Yikes, I never heard of a smokestorm before until now.
  5. This is one of the earliest I've seen this pattern show up. If this was Winter we'd be talking about a strong signal for an Arctic Blast with the ridge about to amplify up into Alaska. There's going to be no shortage of blocking this Winter, just going to be a matter of where it sets up shop.
  6. I like their new head coach Peery and his fast up-tempo style that he brings. Makes the college game much better to watch and puts a better product out there on the court. I believe the future is bright with him. It's been about a decade since we've been dancing but I think we can get there again soon. It's going to be fun watching them play this year at the new Viking Pavilion. Much better than the old Peter Stott Center when I use to go to school there.
  7. Awesome story and it's great to have your cause out there in the forefront now. It looks like your getting the best care and the future looks great for you. I hope you continue to get better until you don't have to worry about this anymore then continue to help others. As a PSU alumni, it saddens me we are the only school in Oregon that hasn't sent you a jersey. We need to get that fixed soon!
  8. Air quality is still deteriorating. If things don't improve PDX Metro will be under very unhealthy air by morning. I'm not going to work if that happens.
  9. It's really bad down here. Had to stay inside to eat lunch today. Lighting over the weekend was the main culprit that led to more than 140 new wildfires in BC. https://globalnews.ca/news/4383682/bc-wildfire-update-sunday-august-12/
  10. The air quality is starting to deteriorate west of the Cascades now. As of 7pm, it looks like unhealthy air for all populations has made its way into the Olympia and Centralia areas as well as around Port Angeles.
  11. I hope your surgery goes well. Think happy thoughts before you go in. After all you've been through, you deserve to get lots of cold and snow this Winter.
  12. Yeah, I know that. It's one of the things that concerns me but I believe we will overcome that. I'd be more worried if the PNW was the only area that was hot this summer. In July, there were 10 states that had hotter July's than WA/OR, with 6 of those states in the Northeast.
  13. Here's a wider view of the high temperatures next Monday. For some reason the map above doesn't show the cities and counties.
  14. The 12z EURO brings insane heat one week from today. It's showing PDX getting to 106. If we're going to continue to be hot, might as all go all out now.
  15. I was never comparing this summer to 1949, far from it. Don't know how you came to that conclusion. I was just pointing out that Regina and Albany broke summer heat records that date back to 1949. I know all about what has happened at DCA. It's one of the stations in the summer forecast contest and I commented before about all the rain you have had. It doesn't take away from the fact many locations in the NE have had a hot summer, some producing all time heat records. Just to name a couple. Burlington, Vermont just recorded its hottest month ever (July 2018) in close to 100 years, records go back to 1892. Another one is Caribou, Maine. It also recorded its hottest month ever last month.
  16. Arghhh, hopefully that thick smoke doesn't spread west over the Cascades.
  17. Current Air Quality Index for the PNW. Right now it looks like we are fine west of the Cascades but there's unhealthy air east of the Cascades in SE BC/NE WA.
