  1. As we wind down the last few days of January 2020 here is where Grand Rapids stands. The mean temperature is now at 31.1° if that were to hold this would become the 6th warmest January of record. With no cold in the cards this will be a top 10 warmest January of record (records go back to 1892) The high for the month will be 49 and the low will be +11. For this winter season the coldest it has been so far is just +7 If that holds for the next 2 months the winter of 2019/20 will join the winters of 1920/21 and 1930/31 where it has not gotten any colder this +7. So far this month there have only been 6 days that stayed at 32 or colder. As for snow fall for the month 11.4” since December 1st 25.7” and for the season 32.5” We would have to have record snow falls in either February or March just to make it to average for this winter. If that were to happen the month I feel would have the best chance is March.
  2. Officially Grand Rapids has not had a clear day this month.
  3. Today is the anniversary of two of the biggest snowstorms in my life time. One in 1967 and the other in 1978. There has not been one storm that compares to them since 1978. Nice write up from Bill Steffen from here in Grand Rapids 1967 https://www.woodtv.com/bills-blog-2/blizzard-of-1967/ 1978 https://www.woodtv.com/bills-blog-2/the-blizzard-of-1978-2/ Boy it has been stuck in the mid 30's now for a long time at this time it is cloudy and 35 here at my house and now there is a lot of green grass starting to show.
  4. We are in a very boring stable weather pattern. Since Wednesday the temperature has ranged from just 28 to 36. It has not been below 32 since 7 AM on Thursday. So a lot of mid 30's with a lot of clouds and light rain with some light snow. Not much to say for late January. And with the current mean for the month at 30.8 and no cold in the next week or more it looks like Grand Rapids will end this January in the top 10 with a 6 or 7 warmest a good bet. The current mean at Muskegon of 31.6 would be a top 10 and looks like a 6 or 7 warmest there as well.
  5. I know it is mid winter but Accuweather has issued its first spring long range guess. At this time I am not impressed. But here it is. March…. Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, eastern Ohio Valley – Winter conditions can linger into March with a couple of big storms. We expect a colder-than-normal March, but coldest air holds back toward Midwest; ski areas that have suffered through mild and wet early to midwinter may benefit from extended winter season. But an active pattern no doubt, whether rain or snow, can lead to soft, muddy fields by April and possible minor delays working in the fields (moderate confidence). April……Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, eastern Ohio Valley – April 2019 was wet, but still quite mild in the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Northeast. It should be drier Northeast this April, but highest temperatures may be farther west into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. Northern New England snowpack may linger early and keep temperatures down in northern New England (moderate confidence). May…..Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, eastern Ohio Valley – Not nearly as warm as the second half of May 2019. Despite a downturn in temperatures, severe weather will try to match 2019 events. It should be active with near- to above-normal precipitation holding back prolonged warm periods (moderate confidence). Note their winter long range guess did not play out at all so we will see how this spring long range guess plays out.
  6. 35 with rain falling here at this time. According to Bill Steffen This is the 4 wettest and 5 warmest start to any winter here at Grand Rapids

  9. 31 with very light snow falling here at this time. Just a trace of new snow with around 5" of old snow on the ground.
  10. Grand Rapids now has had for the first time this winter 3 days in a row of highs in the 20's and lows in the teens. Could this be the coldest 3 to 4 days of the winter of 2019/20? We shall see. At this time it is 19 and cloudy here at my house and there is 6" of snow on the ground here.
  11. Here is where the official snow fall totals now stand at Grand Rapids, MI for January 11.3" Since December 1st (met winter) 25.6" and for the season 32.4" all are below average for this date. Here is some snow fall totals for Northern Michigan where the totals are kind of close to average https://www.weather.gov/apx/snow
  12. This winter season continues to be warmer than average with the mean temperature at Grand Rapids for December being 33.2° (+4.0) and January’s mean is now at 31.9° (+7.4) with the rest of the month looking warmer than average. On the snow fall side January is now at 11.3″ and that is still below average for this date. Since December 1st GR snow fall is now at 25.6″ and for the season it is at 32.4″ all below where GR is on average thru this date. BTW it looks like the official low at GRR was 11 here at my house it got down to +7 last night before the clouds moved in. At this time it is 24 here with some light snow falling.
  13. Officially at Grand Rapids there was 6.3" of snow fall. For the month of January the total is now at 8.8" for for meteorological winter 23.1″ for the season 29.9″
  14. Officially at GRR the snow fall for yesterday was 6.3" That is about what I had yesterday. The totals (not including what fell after midnight) for Grand Rapids for January 8.8" for meteorological winter 23.1" for the season 29.9" Here at my house I had 6" of new snow overnight and with the compacting I have 8.5" on the ground at this time. It is now 26° the snow has now stopped and there are some breaks in the clouds.
  15. Looks like there is about 3" of new snow tonight. The current temperature here is 24 with snow and some blowing snow.
  16. I cleared the driveway earlier before the snow got wet and used the snowblower. At that time I had 5.8" of snow on the driveway. The plow came thru (I was surprised as in the past it generally took 2 to 3 days before the plow came thru) anyway the snow at the end of the drive was very wet and heavy. At this time it is getting windy and 34.
  17. I have just under 6" of snow on the ground the snow is now mixing with a little sleet here and the temperature is 27 with light winds.
  18. That don't surprise me at all after last weekends "Winter Storm Not!"
  19. Currently there is some light snow falling with a temperature of 25. To the west and NW of here there are temperatures that are now below zero. After last weekends “Winter Storm Not!” I wonder how many of the NWS offices will be a little more cautious (maybe) in handing out their headlines. But then if the weather is bad or good do we really need to be “warned?” or “advised” for that matter?
  20. considerable cloudy and 34 here. Still a solid trace of snow on the ground but not much.
  21. For anyone who was wondering what several inches of snow on the ground looks like here are some pictures from Munising https://www.exploremunising.com/web-cams/
  22. As of this morning Grand Rapids, Michigan has had 0.9" of snow this January. and is now at 15.2" since December 1st and is at 22.0" for the season. Of course this is 16" below where we should be as of this date. With the light snow this morning GR should now be over the one inch mark for January 2020 While a trace is being reported at the air port here at my house I have just under one inch of snow on the ground.
  23. After this mornings 1/4 inch of snow Grand Rapids should now be over the one inch mark for the month of January 2020. And now with the 22" for the season GR is only 16" below the average snow fall as of this date. 32 here at this time with just over a half inch of sleet and snow on the ground.
  24. Winter Storm Not! dropped 2.02" of rain at Grand Rapids and 0.4" of sleet and snow. The total for the season at Grand Rapids is now at 21.9" and that is 15.2" below the average as of this date.
  25. I think it was Acculess weather that tried (started) naming winter storms. Well I have a great name for the 1st winter storms of 2020. Winter Storm Not!! Here at Grand Rapids Winter Storm Not! dropped a record 2.02" of rain there was some ice but mostly on trees and cars ect the roads were for the most part just wet. The roads did get some sleet and ice on them after dark. The total amount of sleet and snow was 0.4" The high during the event was 48 and the low was 24. At this time I have less than a half inch of ice, sleet and snow on the ground. Needless to say Winter Storm Not! will soon be forgotten. At this time it is mostly cloudy and 20 here at my house
