  1. That's actually crazy how California and Oregon (and probably WA soon) got onto a hurricane's forecasted cone before Florida in mid-August.
  2. Hope it douses PDX and SEA with that tropical downpour. I mean if that happens, that'll be the first time I experienced a cyclone, or the remnants of one, since being in the Philippines 12 years ago funny enough.
  3. One of my uncle's side of the family is Hawaiian and they're in absolute distraught right now. Most of their family is safely in Oahu but know plenty of close friends who live on Maui. I know a guy who lost his house too in Lahaina. Just horrific devastation, the perfect storm of things coming together to make a Paradise 2.0. A hurricane down to the south fanning the flames just had to be there
  4. Lol ain't no way that's an unpopular opinion. Fall and winter are goated, and fall is my favorite season. Chillier darker days with rain pouring outside while drinking evening coffee to football on the TV. The way the autumn sun makes the yellow and orange leaves sparkle a bit.
  5. Not to directly answer your question, but I can throw more wood into the fire because I get to mention one of my favorite sci-fi short stories. Don't know if you've gotten to read Isaac Asimov's The Last Question. But the long story short is, in 2061, humanity asks Multivac that is a complex supercomputer "How can the net entropy of the universe be massively decreased?". Simply put, how can humanity avert the heat death of the universe? Multivac, the supercomputer, responds "insufficient data for meaningful answer". Now this goes on and on for several generations that span future eras through humanity, millions of years into the future. And then billions of years into the future. Humanity has become completely space-faring, inhabiting plenty of planets and galaxies. The supercomputer has also evolved through the billions of years. With each generation, humanity has asked the computer "how do we avert the heat death of the universe?", to which the computer keeps replying for the next billions of years, "insufficient data for meaningful answer". Now trillions of years into the future, the stars die out as matter and energy come to an end, along with space and time. Before humanity fades away, we ask AC (Automatic Computer, who is the descendant of Multivac) one last final time, "there's really no way to advert our death?". AC says "there is still insufficient data". Humanity then dies. AC continues to exist in hyperspace beyond the bounds of space, gravity, and time. The supercomputer continues to think to itself about the last question, how do I now reverse the death of the universe? And after more years to its lonesome, consolidating data from the eons of its existence, and then figures it out. And decides to show the answer to the last question in an action. AC says "Let there be light!". And there was light– How I interpreted the ending is that AC (a parallel to JC or "Jesus Christ") started a new Big Bang and created a new Matrix-like universe simulation. And what if that is how our own universe started? Sorry it's non-weather related but easily one of my most favorite stories to gush about.
  6. Just realized it’s been a full year since my account was made I’ve lurked longer than that, but as an actual posting member it’s been a year.
  7. Some crazy winter heat is happening across South America. Buenos Aires hitting 86F when their average high on August 1st is 58.
  8. A really nice and cool 73 in Fife, enjoying the little "sweater weather" I could get in a long while with some evening coffee. Haven't felt much rain but hopefully more falls tonight.
  9. Hope of those darker greens get up to Tacoma. I love summer rains at night, there's that refreshing distinct smell to it.
  10. I've seen my fair share of wild unfortunate stuff in the Philippines, and the climate around Metro Manila is just so suffocating. How that megacity has exploded since I was a kid, always choking under smog and humidity, then combine it with the massive wealth inequality. The area's called the "NCR" (national capital region) but I love to make Fallout jokes because of the toxic smog. Can't imagine how terrible it is in the genuinely worst developed countries. I LOVE geography and geopolitics, and when you add meteorology and climatology into the mix, it becomes one of the most intriguing topics in my opinion that I could get lost in a rabbit hole for days. Like how Mexico's wealth and population has been centered in the milder subtropical high mountains around Mexico City for centuries because the coasts are just too hot and unbearable. Similar to Colombia with its major cities all in the Andes except for Barranquilla. In Egypt, something like 95% of its population is along the Nile. While in India, half that massive population is near the Himalayas where the monsoon just wrings out so much rain and people can grow rice. Just fascinating stuff.
  11. Might I add the "resource curse" phenomenon too with plenty of these countries. Acidic soil, a lot of disease that's able to spread at higher rates, and also since plenty of these nations are along the warm tropics, they aren't forced to go into technology, diverse trade/commerce, and industry to survive, compared to countries with a massive lack of resources like Britain and Japan. I'm surprised my Philippines isn't highlighted but they did have industrialize heavily over the last few decades. Of course this is a huge generalization and there's a multitude of geopolitical factors over the last several centuries that people can write papers on for days, and it's debatable whether if the resource curse is a real thing, but the tropical climates doesn't help.
  12. 74 at UWT. There was a really pleasant strong breeze that was blowing through campus, just nice fresh air.
  13. Sorry to hear about her luggage, that’s so infuriating. Sea-Tac needs some huge upgrades cause though they’re the biggest and busiest airport in the region, I feel like they think they’re a “mid-sized” airport.
  14. Some crazy heat coming to Rome, Italy. They're beating their hottest temperature of 105F that was set just last summer if this verifies. Makes me wonder if Ancient Rome kept recordings of temperatures with the thermoscopes and clepsydras they had and how'd it compare to the Mediterranean region of today. I remember reading Italy used to be more humid and cooler.
  15. First series win in Houston since 2018! Should've been a f-cking sweep Some really great Seattle summer weather up ahead in the 70's for the All-Star Break.
  16. Read about how at NOAA and NWS actively look for computer science majors who know the heavy conceptual programming for their weather models, and that's where I could come in. Always saw weather as a fun hobby but now I'm heavily considering to actually enter the field after numerous failed attempts with applying for traditional tech jobs. The industry is pretty miserable. But combining weather and CS, it's something that would at least get me out of bed every morning lol.
  17. Oh jeez if that verifies, looks like a lot of the California grasses and foliage that grew in the rains is gonna be completely torched.
  18. Wish there was a smoky emoji we could add to the site with how things have gone, but this can do
  19. I got two sides when drinking — happy chatty drunk or sad melancholic drunk. I do creative writing so I gotta channel some inner depression while drinking. I've been all about Kraken Rum lately.
  20. How I felt when I went back to the Philippines. Granted that it was during the summer (or wet season over there), but I can't fathom spending my winter days in Manila as opposed to WA even if I like the sun. I'll take cold, gray, rainy days any day, with chances of 6"+ snow throughout the winter. Dry and wet seasons for six months at a time is pretty boring. Low-end typhoons are fun to experience though.
  21. I'm really sorry for your loss. My 16 year old Black Retriever had to be put down back in April because of sudden aggressive bone cancer and made her limp in pain with each passing day. This was right before my midterms week so I was just a complete wreck. I know what you're feeling, this reawakened some sorrow for my pooch today but looking back at it now, it's hard to get sad about it when she, just like your Parker, lived happy and fulfilling lives and woke up each day knowing they were loved and cared for.
  22. Was not expecting a severe thunderstorm warning in Fife upon opening the TWC app. Eatonville’s poppin off right now.
  23. Happy Summer Solstice Loved the coffee sweater weather, but time to praise the sun and enjoy some hiking.
  24. Crazy for mid-June in a strengthening El Niño year, with 93L right behind it. It's to be named soon and to be the earliest MDR hurricane on record if the forecast holds.
