  1. That orographic lift got us 1.46" in Modjeska Canyon.
  2. We had snow in the canyons around 5pm. It melted when it hit the ground here in Modjeska, but did stick a bit in Silverado Canyon. Here's some shots from Next Door of Silverado.
  3. Modjeska Canyon has had 4.13" in the last 12 hrs. and 5.20" in the last 24 hrs. Santiago Creek, which runs behind my house, is raging.
  4. Chilly morning today. My truck's door was frozen shut at 7am and I had ice on my windshield. A local weather station said it was 31* at 6:40 am.
  5. Nice to get some rain. Let's hope it's a harbinger of a wet winter
  6. The atmospheric river dumped a paltry 0.19" of rain on Modjeska.
  7. Had 0.83" here in Modjeska from this latest storm. There's finally enough water in the creek for the treefrogs to start their mating ritual, which includes lots of loud croaking. They got a late start this year, they usually start this racket in January. Here's what it sounds like in my back yard: https://app.box.com/s/tff63wy7pjo2shgaxfs7
  8. I would have preferred a little wind with the low temps. It might have mitigated the leaf burn I've got on some of my more tender plants.
  9. WeatherUnderground is forecasting a low of 26* Monday night here in Modjeska. I sure hope they're wrong, I don't want to be covering plants.
  10. Weather Underground said it was 33* when I got up at 6:30am. Here's today's data from a nearby Modjeska Canyon weather station Brr...
  11. I'm a bit skeptical too Dan, but I'm seeing it reported in the OC Register and LA Times. I'm in Modjeska Canyon just east of Lake Forest and we are generally more extreme, hot and cold, than than they are and our high yesterday was 82.
  12. Yep. Here's a post from the local 'Next Door' forum: Someone wrote: "I got onto Santiago Canyon Road about 4:00 give or take 30 minutes (already on canyon time). Hit stretches from the lake to near Williams where the downpour was so strong you could barely see 20 feet and cars were stopping in the road. Got to the final stretch coming up to Modjeska and there were patches of blue showing overhead and to the south. Local weather on a micro scale."
  13. We got a quarter inch here at the base of Santiago when the storm blew through.
  14. Caught the weather on the local news last night and they were forecasting 122 for the lower deserts next week. Scott's post led me to Google 'Death Valley highest temp' and they say it was 134* on July 10, 1934 - at, aptly named, Furnace Creek.
  15. California storms: Wettest water year, so far, in 122 years of records The statewide precipitation values given by NCEI “represent area weighted average of values observed at weather stations across the state,” according to Nina Oakley, a California Climate Specialist with the Western Regional Climate Center, part of NOAA. Full story here.
  16. This story, from The Mercury News, explains that Santa Barbara is still labeled in severe drought because their groundwater levels and reservoir have yet to recover. A U.S. Geological Survey well in the area that dropped 110 feet in the last decade only rose a foot last month.
  17. Chilly indeed here in Modjeska - 31.4* this morning. 33* yesterday morning.
  18. Friday's total was 2.28" here in Modjeska. Weather Underground forecast 3.15", while the NWS predicted 5.91". It looks like the brunt of this storm was the Santa Barbara area.
  19. We use rice bales here. The County has a barn sized pile at the foot of the canyon for resident's use. Santiago Creek is 75' from my back door. It got pretty high last month when we had 3.5" here and 5 - 7" on Santiago and Modjeska Peak above us. Luckily, we've got a 6' berm on our side of the creek which affords us pretty good protection. There are other areas where the water will crest way before it affects our property. But if we get twice as much rain this weekend than the last large storm, it's going to get interesting. 18.56" for the last 4 months: October 15 - February 14
