  1. The last few frames before the clown show are looking much better too. It's only one run, but it's nice to have at least a tiny carrot to swallow.
  2. Yeah, it would be a nice change from the current pattern. And it does look a bit better than the last few runs around HR 162 (at least for NW WA), though it has a little ways to go to be meaningful. Something to possibly track at least...
  3. GFS looks a lot better in the mid-range. It's not far from a good solution with enough cold air just north of the border. I'm not giving up on the winter (or true love/world peace) yet.
  4. True, but it wasn't selling this in this time frame. In all fairness, you did mention that the ridge might retrograde, but that would have been after it sat over us for many days as per the EPS of a couple of days ago. Things have changed (for now at least.... *grabs closest rabbit*). It's all good, though. I'm obviously happy with the latest trends....
  5. If I weren't a bit sleepy I would make sweet love to that map.
  6. Haven't talked about that stuff, but I do show model runs out to 10+ days from time-to-time even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the course topic. It makes me seem like some sort of Nostradamus in there the times when it more or less verifies
  7. I'm going to tell my whole class first thing tomorrow. It's like Christmas morning for them whenever I mention "Eurasian wavebreak" and "full latitude block."
  8. As we wait to see if lowland snow will materialize or not in the next couple of weeks it's nice to see that it's snowing snowballs at Crystal Mountain right now, with plenty more to come
  9. The NAM has joined Team Canada. Shows more snow Tuesday night/Wednesday morning for much of Western WA. It's a Festivus Miracle!
  10. That's usually the best policy in these situations.....though I mostly hit the sack, not the rack. Will try that next time, though
  11. .....and just a few short decades away from our ultimate but inevitable sad demise. I'm going to focus on tomorrow, though
  12. Not sure about his libido, but somehow Tiger is in 5th place heading into the weekend. I peed next to him about 20 years ago at the MGM in Vegas. One of the top 10 moments of my life.... .....and in weather news, I'm freezing my a** off right now. Went out to the bars tonight in a thin shirt and no jacket in hopes that would impress the ladies. Since I'm posting on a weather forum right now we all know how that worked out
  13. I don't have any outdoor lights, but I kept my Christmas tree up all year. Everyone thought I was a dumb*** over the summer, but it's gonna pay off soon
  14. Last night's windstorm resulted in the worst power outage in Capitol Hill in at least a decade. I've never seen all the shops, bars, and restaurants on Broadway pitch black at dinnertime as far as the eye could see, and I've been in this neighborhood since 2003. So many sushi places must have lost their inventory. Oh the humanity.... I somehow lost only half the power in my apartment for a while (despite re-setting the circuit breakers a few times). Some outlets and lights worked and some didn't - I didn't even realize that was possible. I was still praising the heavens and celebrating my semi-good fortune compared to my immediate neighbors when I lost all power around 11:00. Took all my food out of the fridge and onto the balcony at 1:00 a.m. to rescue what I could. Nearly the exact moment I placed the last condiment bottle on the balcony the power came back on and I brought everything back inside. Also graded papers by flashlight for 1.5 hours after having a ladyfriend over in the dark. Wasn't the most relaxing of evenings, but certainly memorable. Was very impressed by the wind gusts up here. Trees were most bendy.
  15. Woke up 20 minutes ago to find it snowing here with big flakes. Not sticking to anything yet, not even car glass or a random squirrel.
  16. I like this part of NWS SEA's latest forecast discussion: "It is often a surprise one way or the other when you open the curtains at daybreak..." That's been true for me at least four times this winter (twice when I wasn't really expecting any sticking snow). Getting shadowed now but there's moisture blossoming all around with some interesting cells near the coast. I'm expecting 0-27 inches overnight (with anything more than 0 being the surprise).
  17. 850s not as cold late next week but the blocking looks even better. Eternal perhaps.
  18. The off-and-on nature of the snow tonight really made me realize how long it can take for snow to reach the ground from radar-beam level. There was around a 20-minute delay at times (even after adjusting for any time lag in the radar) from when the heavier returns were over my neighborhood until the snow graced the waiting earth below.
  19. Heaviest snow of the night so far. I guess that thing with the chickens is finally paying off.
  20. Lol Living further north/east is usually preferable in these situations, but I'm still far enough north to get in on the action from time to time. I've had thundersnow in a CZ in 2009 and today, so I really can't complain. The 400 or so feet of elevation makes a huge difference too. You see a difference just walking down to Broadway a lot of times (5 blocks from here), and we often get several inches more than downtown (or snow when they get rain), and it's only a 4-minute bike ride away (downhill at least ).
  21. I second that. It's snowing steadily here and I'm most thankful for that. At the same time I'd be willing to sacrifice 107 chickens to get that band to move a few thousand meters to the south. I could literally walk less than an hour to see moderate snow, and the same thing was true almost two hours ago. EDIT: It looks like a new band is forming due west of the city. Hopefully she can fill in a bit to the east.
  22. Snowing again nicely here. The ground is still white from this afternoon's thundersnow and the radar looks rather encouraging. This is easily my favorite winter since 2008. The local squirrels and I won't forget this one!
  23. I can confirm that. I'm at the Roy Street Cafe on Broadway. Everything turning white with moderate/heavy thundersnow. Saw two flashes so far
  24. I can't say for sure how large they were, but the snowflakes I saw early this afternoon in Capitol Hill were probably the biggest I've ever seen. I wouldn't believe him either if I hadn't seen it myself. Also, there was around 5-6 inches of snow on the ground in Volunteer Park at the very top of the hill. Very large limbs were snapping and coming down all over the park every few minutes, and a big evergreen nearly fell over. To be honest I'm surprised/hope that no one got killed. People were frolicking around most vigorously though and snowpeople of all shapes, sizes, and textures abounded. Best day I've had there since 2008
  25. Yup, just went for a nice snowy walk outside. Around an inch on the roads and two inches on top of cars and squirrels.
