  1. Meanwhile snow is forecast on and off starting Wednesday IMBY.
  2. 2022 saw slight below normal temps in Spokane. Wonder when the last time that happened. We have had 95 inches of snow so far this winter in Leavenworth, which is what we average for the entire winter, and still another 3 months to go.
  3. NWS Spokane is calling for average temps here in the long range. All the ensembles are showing us getting a good amount of snow. Not sure why they think it is supposed to be so warm here Definitely not any major cold, but it honestly looks like average temps over east of the mountains.
  4. I think generator sales will take a big jump over here. During the coldest day in Leavenworth, temps got down to -10 and the energy demand was so high that an underground transformer melted. That caused an outage for almost a full day for hundreds of homes south of downtown, during the coldest day in decades. Also many of those homes had major problems with water, as some rely on water pumps to deliver water, especially those with multiple buildings on their property, and when those went down, the water was unable to flow and froze in the pipes. It was a real nightmare for a lot of people. I'm in city limits and didn't have any problems.
  5. Interesting how the West side is torching, but over here and in Eastern Oregon temps look to be normal.
  6. I've had about 10 6" events this winter so far. 6" overnight.
  7. EPS shows no sign of shutting down the Pacific.
  8. The February 2019 was, did you mean that year? It was a Nino, and during a Nino February is the least likely month to get cold and snow, but the SSW in the right location overwhelmed the Nino. I know Ventrice has done research into Siberian SSW events vs North Atlantic SSW events.
  9. Good question, so I looked it up on Wikipedia The Methow (/ˈmɛthaʊ/ MET-how) are a Native American tribe that lived along the Methow River, a tributary of the Columbia River in northern Washington.[1] The river's English name is taken from that of the tribe. The name "Methow" comes from the Okanagan placename /mətxʷú/, meaning "sunflower (seeds)". The tribe's name for the river was Buttlemuleemauch, meaning "salmon falls river".[
  10. Be careful what you wish for. I think most SSW events get the East cold, not the west. February 2019 an obvious exception. Besides, the PNW got pretty darn cold without one recently. And it may depend on if it's a Siberian event or North Atlantic event (do you know where it is forecasted to be?). I get the potential though. Nina years often have North Pacific ridging late January and into February, which would be a nice setup if there is a SSW event Good article about it here. It's an older article, but relevant for the PNW. https://theconvergencezone.com/2021/01/05/will-sudden-stratospheric-warming-lead-to-an-arctic-cold-blast-in-late-
  11. Point forecasts here are awful sometimes. I've seen a forecast of 53 degrees where it ended up at 39 and then the next week it said rain and 43. We had a WSW in the zone forecast, which was right. Had a high of 28. In winter they are usually too warm by 5+ degrees, and have areas that are almost always warmer than us as being cooler.
  12. We have had a pretty high qpf ratio, so most of the snow has been very lightweight. And thats thanks to much colder weather. Perfect snow IMO. Easy to shovel or use a snowblower on. Therefore the water content is much lower than what you would think based on what you see on the ground. Now with the freezing rain we've had, it's much more difficult to move the snow.
  13. Is it really needed? There was historic cold nationwide, and I don't remember it being associated with a SSW event. Maybe it was?
  14. Weeklies are in All frames are 5 day averages. Last few frames always look weird, not sure why. Probably related to having 5 day averages and the last few days don't have all the days
  15. Blewett had been closed earlier this morning because of a jack-knifed semi. Glad it's cleared up.
  16. I'm still below freezing here. Right now at 30, warmest in a long time. I don't think I've been above freezing since early November. We've had lots of freezing rain over the last 48 hours and everything is pretty icy. Highway 2 might be ok, not sure about other roads. All the cross country ski trails in town are closed because it's a sheet of ice. They are still forecasting rain and then snow overnight, and maybe more snow later this week.
  17. 2 years in a row for SV. I lived there for 12 years. Really liked it there.

  19. Leavenworth.org is the website to plan things. It's good for all seasons, but for Summer and December you have to plan ahead, especially December
