  1. "Oh noes, the Arctic is going to get barely above freezing! The sky is falling the sky is falling!"
  2. Light snow just started here blowing in breezy east wind. They're small dry-looking flakes reminiscent of what I've seen in Central Oregon.
  3. Just stopped snowing here. Near Laurelhurst in Portland at about 175'... There were little bursts of light snow mixed with a little rain.
  4. Just had a heavy shower here with chunky rain. I'm at about 170ft near Laurelhurst in Portland.
  5. Lots of scenes like this around Portland right now: http://i.imgur.com/cEVcgXZ.jpg?1
  6. I believe you're correct. Now we'll have to wait and see how high the new record goes before the end of the month!
  7. Moderate sleet falling in NW Portland right now and it seems to be icing up streets.
  8. Agreed. At any rate we're really only a few weeks away from bountiful flowers everywhere!
  9. I checked the forum after being away for most of yesterday... I think if we removed snow_wizard's depressive gripes and all the football commentary there would be hardly any activity... I'm looking forward to continued mild weather. It makes for some nice cycling and hiking weather even with the rain. And flowers are starting to come out!
  10. GFS insists on moist SW flow with lots of mild ran in about 7 days, continuing the pattern this past fall and winter of generally dry weather interrupted every week or so by heavy rain. ECMWF is in fairly good agreement.
  11. I know it's not quite the same, but we had a blizzard warning down here in 2004, and then there's always December 2008.
  12. Yesterday I biked up to Council Crest in t-shirt and shorts – it was in the low 60s down here in SE Portland and even warmer up above 1000 ft at the summit! I only felt chilly coming down through Goose Hollow, where it seems a pool of cooler air had settled in against the east side of the hills. The temperature difference over a few miles is amazing today. It's 59 at about 200 ft elevation near Laurelhurst Park with hazy/murky sunshine, and 49 at PDX about 5 miles to the north.
  13. Well hey, I applaud you for being honest and for trying to take action.
  14. Yeah that makes sense, but western Oregon isn't really in a full-on maritime or oceanic climate. All of the cities you mentioned have significant rainfall throughout the summer and lower average summer high temperatures. I suppose it's kind of like comparing apples to pears.
  15. Auckland and Melbourne have palm trees. Brussels and Dublin are far more oceanic climate-wise than Portland. Compared to most other mid-latitude climates we don't really have "winter." You know, the snowy, cold time of the year with a dormant growing period that lasts significantly longer than ours. We don't really have that, and I'd argue that the cities you listed don't either.
  16. Compared to most other locations at our latitude our average winter is pretty much "fall." We have a short dormant season for plants and trees (basically December to February) and very mild temperatures. If you take away spring flowers and fall leaves from the equation we're pretty much left with wet season and dry season, or even cool season and warm season.
  17. This has been a fantastic winter for outdoor activity!
  18. Yesterday in a park near me I saw magnolia buds looking like they're about to open. I also saw blooming azaleas, vinca minor, a partially-blooming cherry tree, and several other flowers peeking out. It's very similar to last year except perhaps a bit earlier.
  19. Technically we are in a Mediterranean climate categorised as Csb in the Köppen climate classification system. It's similar to parts of NW Spain. Our type of climate is characterised by mild wet winters and warm dry summers. The dry warm season distinction is fairly unique as far as climates go, and it's something you don't generally see in marine-type climates (Cfb, Cfc, etc...).
  20. Yep, especially here in the Portland area where the east wind has been cranking non-stop whenever it's not raining (and sometimes during the rain too). It kind of makes me wonder what the past few months would have been like with a cold pool in the Columbia Basin!
  21. Would you really trade the drippy dark Northwest to live in an icy wonderland under the White Witch?
  22. I've seen cherry trees starting to bloom, azaleas ready to open up, and lots of green flower stems poking up from the soil. Perhaps we'll have some good thunderstorms this spring?
