Will La Niña be strong, weak, or non-existent this winter (for NE America) pls?
I think the biggest negative for you guys in the NW has been the persistent +WPO over the last few Winters. See how it correlates slightly to +temps Even with a slight -PNA signature Low pressure there has been a pattern the mean of the last 6 Winter's The thing about the WPO and EPO is, they very often switch phases after strong periods, on both micro and macro scales. This could mean "we are due" for more -WPO/-EPO, maybe starting this Winter, and not only has the last 6 Winter's been +WPO, but the last 8 months too.. So maybe we are "double due". On micro-scale, two strong +WPO patterns this Summer have reversed, although 10-15 day patterns are only reversing for 3-4 days. And it's unscientific, but those maps going back to 1948 show it be a common theme.. Thanks for the positive comments. The subsurface stuff is why I think a lot of Strong Nino's have been warm Winters in the east. -

This post leaves me D**n near speechless. You were good years ago, but this is next level. Yes....we have been having some decent results in our winters. In fact starting with 2016-17 almost every winter has featured at least one significant cold event, and some months have been first or second tier excellent such as Feb 2019 and December 2021. Winter averages have struggled to be impressive for the most part, because of torchy Januarys. This last winter we did pull off our strongest January cold wave of the century, however, so maybe that is finally changing. No doubt February has been ridiculous with most of them featuring at least one major cold wave and or major snow event starting with 2017. Glad to hear you think this general configuration will persist for a while longer. I think we could pull off a major old school winter fairly soon if the stars align correctly. Fascinating stuff about the subsurface anoms in the ENSO regions. -

Polite Politics
I think it comes from negation of our tendencies to want or cheer upon destruction events. We like change, energy, motion. It is healthy to want extremes. Failure to do that, or repression in this regard en masse eventually creates an entity that cages our fellow man, exposing the animalistic self that is trying so hard to be hidden. I wouldn't want pain and suffering, but a worthy opponent maybe.. Furthermore, if there is a government, then we should want the entity to succeed to its fullest. Rooting for the leadership to be so tangled comes from a lesser self, and the helpless nature of where we see ourselves in the world..- 1
