April 2026 Observations and Discussion
It was a rather cold night with a overnight low of 34 here in my yard. I had a rainfall of 0.35” here yesterday. It will be sunny but cool here over the weekend with highs today through in the low 50’s and lows in the lower 30’s with a good chance of a freeze on Friday night, Saturday morning. Next week looks to have temperatures closer to average with a chance of showers most days. The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 51/41 there was 0.25” of rainfall at the airport. Some weather conditions reported were rain and fog. For today the average H/L is 64/43 the record high of 87 was in 1894 and 1942 the coldest high of 41 was in 1994 the record low of 26 was in 1971 and 2008 the warmest low of 72 was in 1899 the most rainfall of 1.85” was in 1963 and the most snowfall of 3.6” also fell that day. Some weather history for April 30th 1988 A cold front produced high winds in the southwestern U.S. Winds gusting to 90 mph in southwestern Utah downed power lines, and damaged trees and outbuildings. The high winds also downed power lines in Nevada, completely knocking out power in the town of Henderson. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)1990 Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in southern Virginia and the Carolinas, with tennis ball size hail reported southeast of Chesnee SC. Thunderstorms moving over the Chesapeake Bay flooded U.S. Highway 50 on Kent Island MD with several inches of water resulting in a seventeen-mile long traffic jam. April 2026 Observations and Discussion
Hello from Chicago! I’m visiting family for a little while and wouldn’t ya know, the colder pattern shows up! It’s a brisk 36F…brrr! I will say, however, it feels really nice and the smell of moisture is noticeable. My flight was quite interesting. First off, it started by our plane not being able to depart on time because our pilots did not arrive from their previous flight from Tampa. Our plane was completely boarded but no pilots. We waited an extra 45 min before they did their safety checks and logged their books. Once we took off out of PHX, it was clear skies and with a roaring jet stream we were booking. It only took us less than 3 hours flying time (2 hours and 30 min). That is probably a record for me to have experienced. Interestingly, there was barely any turbulence which made it a comfortable flight. At one point, I happened to look outside my window and asked myself “where are we now?” Low and behold, I was directly over our KC peeps!
