  1. The wive's tale about acorns, if it's true, this winter is going to be nuts. Worked with my landscape buddy, think we moved 6 yards of acorns yesterday, cleaning them up and hauling them away. He says it hasn't been like that in years.
  2. If we're 2 months out from serious winter and NOAA says things look bad, that's good. They are almost always wrong.
  3. Wow another winter of all the snow going south to Chicago. Please don't verify. I was in a snow drought belt in between Chicago and Madison last year and it SUCKED HARD. Never rode my snowmobile ONCE.
  4. That's what they're running with. I'm with you too, pretty bold to say 80% of the CONUS is going to be cold and snowy. But that's what they're claiming. They have more detailed forecasts if you go down the page. But they are all in on cold and snowy. https://www.almanac.com/winter-extended-forecast-farmers-almanac
  5. The Old Almanac and Almanac have been doing long range forecasts for over 200 years. They don't have models and all this other stuff, they do it with completely different tools they keep secret. Both almanacs are saying cold and stormy for most of us. Old Almanac is going all in. I guess we'll see, meteorologists seem to think winter won't be that good but the Farmers are all over cold and snow.
  6. Ill be very happy if it just stays cold and we get solid man made snow with some natural snow that hangs around. So much freeze thaw lately, lake didn't even freeze enough for me to snowmobile on last year.
  7. I don't have anything scientific for you, but the last 15 years of my winter loving the best winters have been when we've had a sudden, late shift from summer to fall/winter, and vice versa. Last year was an early start, I was so excited I rushed back and grabbed my snowmobile in November. Then I proceeded to have a winter so bad the lake never froze enough for me to ride around on it, let alone the trails being open.
  8. It is a lot of fun for sure. I'm really hoping this winter rocks, have big plans to drive around the country snowboarding. And I finished Ski Patrol training so I'm not stuck at Alpine Valley two or three days a week.
  9. Snowboarded there, it really is gorgeous. Fun place to snowboard and ski too, lots of moguls and trees though.
  10. Oh man I hope next winter is good. I ended my snowboard season in Lutsen with a high level snowboard instructor who taught me so much stuff, only for everything to be put away for the season.
  11. Hope I can real this in to Lutsen, MN. The timing is perfect for my final ski trip but it's just a little too far south.
  12. Was up in Hurley snowboardidng Whitecap Mountains, what an awesome place. Definitely under rated, awesome spring conditions for their last weekend. Going to be there next winter for sure. Snow was great, missed the snow down here but almost all the resorts were closed anyways. Next weekend doing Lutsen, looks like it actually might be pretty awesome. GFS already showing something great for us at Lutsen next weekend.
  13. That forecast in Ironwood, I really messed up, I screwed up and should have left Cascade directly to Snow River.
  14. I'm starting to wonder if I should man up and make the drive from Wausau to the UP. I guess it depends if Wausau sees rain next week or if it ends up as snow. 3 hours to Wausau then 2 and a half to Whitecap. I might do it. Looks awfully good up there.
  15. One more wave of rain. Wilmot has less snow than Alpine but it's already deteriorated a lot. Think the season is done here for the year. One more day at Cascade, gonna sneak away to Granite, then hopefully a weekend with some friends at Lutsen and then it's time for summer!
  16. Snow was definitely heavy and wet but it was so much fun to snowboard in. A lot of work because it's so heavy, but absolutely amazing to get something like this in the middle of March. Last few years we've barely made it into March, sometimes not even that long. They are going to try and keep the hill open another week. If you are around Chicago and you want to ski or snowboard Alpine Valley is in amazing shape for spring skiing and for a weekend it was extremely quiet.
  17. Oh man the first year I started looking at models I thought I would be snowboarding into April and it was going to be the most epic March ever, lol.
  18. That's pretty impressive considering how the models have overhyped everything this season and how these March snowstorms almost always end up massively disappointing. I'm just hoping most of this falls after the ski hill closes so I can wake up and make some fresh tracks. It's sticking pretty well up here in grass and stuff, took a while to start on the streets.
  19. This has a lot of potential. If they are counting for 4-7 on warm ground where most of it will melt, the ski hills will see a lot of snow because it'll be falling on existing snow and the trees will trap it. Looks like Ski Patrol shift tomorrow will be quite fun, dead in the morning and fresh snow for me. Nice for winter to go out with a bang here instead of a soft wimper.
  20. Gotta put a new starter and gear in my stand up Superjet before I can ride. All I have to ride in cold water is a stand up jet ski, even with a 6mm two piece diving suit, boots, and gloves it's pretty cold out there when the air and water are in the 40s. I always try and make the distance between snowboarding season and jet ski season as short as possible. Last day for local riding is the 19th. My record between snowboard and jet ski is snowboard monday then jet ski friday. This year the record will fall. It's easy to complain about how bad this winter was and never being able to use my snowmobile, not even on the lake since it never froze enough to be safe, but a March like this is the best when you go from possible snow storm in the last week or two of boarding to the lake just waiting for you to jet ski. Gonna siphon the gas out of my snowmobile and throw it in a ski. I'm actually pretty excited about this, a rapid change with weather between seasons hasn't happened the last few years. Last year the lake was so frozen because it was so cold so often but we had no snow cover.
  21. Lake is almost thawed here, just a big chunk of ice floating in the bay.
  22. The models always struggle very badly this time of year. Just enjoy it as entertainment and if it actually happens be extremely grateful.
  23. Every year I've been here the models always struggle with the end of winter. For there start of March there's almost always a huge snow storm 5+ days out and there's almost always a turn to cold temps 4+ days out, but it never shows up and it ends up disappointing, just getting pushed back further and further. The models all wuss out when it gets under 4 or 5 days and the local forecasts always keep pushing the cold back further and further as snow totals drop.
  24. I know this is a silly run but the way that finger of no snow reaches exactly to cascade mountain actually kind of makes me mad.
