Only way to make a dent in the deficit is to cut social security heavily. That will never happen because it is wildly unpopular. The amount of bloat that you can cut is really irrelevant, especially when you plan on cutting taxes and have no feasible plan to replace that revenue for the country.

Not true. Just looked at trump's website and couldn't find a single proposed policy. Just a bunch of empty promises and platitudes as you say. The only policy he actually proposes is crazy stuff like 60% flat tariffs and deporting 15 million people but that's not even on his website. It sounds like it's pretty much official that Trump is going to create a position for Elon Musk to look for fat in the federal budget that can be cut. MUCH NEEDED! I have always thought you could do a 5% across the board cut on government spending and totally pay for it just by streamlining and cutting waste. Rush Limbaugh used to say you could balance the budget just by freezing spending at current levels for 4 years. Just no excuse to not get it done.
