  1. Does anybody here have an account to get stories from the Seattle Times Archives that is online? I don't live in the area but I and I am sure many others would gladly love it if someone with access could post articles of major storms that struck Seattle so we can have a historical reference especially ones from the 1920s and late 1800s. The previews of the Seattle Times Archives are a complete joke and I wonder why they bothered with previews at all as you don't see anything.
  2. I'm always dreaming. We are looking for a small property of land in the Bend/Prineville area for Dad to retire too so we can be in a slightly drier climate and closer to the mountains for the snow! I can't wait! Say goodbye to Salem! There is even property near you're area called Bozeman or something like that but Dad is worried about too much snow and I tried to talk him into it but the other factor is there is no pharmacy work. He works at a small mom and pop place and wants to do relief work and still clock in a few days a week for an income. The only offerings in you're area are for chain stores that will make him work 24/7 just about and he would never be seen again. Been there don't that and it' s not a pleasant ride especially with being in his 60s. He did that kind of work when he was middle aged and it wore him out then when he had tons of energy! Being at a mom and pop pharmacy compared to a chain store he is able to come home at a decent time and the store is not open on the weekends. We went for the day two weekends ago to preview some property we found on the internet that met our criteria and liked some of what we saw. The moment we got out of the valley floor and into the foothills me and my parents had our sinuses literally drained and our heads felt much better! It was an interesting experience. Next week we will spend several days in the Bend area as we have an interesting list from a realtor who has been very willing to help us and went thru the hoops so we didn't have to. It will be interesting especially with the beginning of the week looking to be warm so I hope we clear our colds out of our system.
  3. Sorry. I am still wishing for a Jan 1950 style winter! This year came close a few times however it was Eugene that got below 0F but March was exciting with it's constant downpours!. We did get down in the upper single digits this winter but it wasn't as exciting with just only a thin thing of snow. Sort of reminded me of the 1998 Artic Blast that also got down to 10F in Silverton area. Feb around here was the bomb but even then I think Eugene once again got the most accumulations or did Salem cash in the most? What was the official totals of the two places?
  4. Not to be whining but why can't the Pacific Northwest cash in on snow/cold like the East Coast has been the last several years. If it weren't for the Feb cold spell this would've been a pretty lame winter but even at that it was only for a few days. We seem to always be stuck in between everything. I am actually glad we got the heavy rain in March because it was pretty much the only way to have weather excitement. I think the 2008 cold spell was more impressive because it was slightly more widespread. When we do get cold/snow it seems to be more localized to certain cities/towns then they used to be.
  5. In the Salem/Silverton area I've had over 3.00s of rain since I emptied my gauge on Wednesday afternoon. Almost every day there was convective heavy showers hitting the area but non thunder. It has been a pretty dark week though Saturday the sun came out at times to brighten the day but otherwise a nasty dull week but good for the crops and mountain snowpack. Hopefully this rain isn't radioactive if it's coming from (that) area but who cares! As long as the mountains get their water supply we will be good for the upcoming summer!.
  6. Hi. I was born in the Chico California area wishing to know how the weather has been down there from the reports it looks like they are playing catch up on rainfall totals so are they having any thunderstorms yet with lightning? http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/merv/lightning.gif
  7. I am sorry this is long but my brain is stuck in third gear right now due to illnesses and can't get it up to first. Is the ground bone dry in California right now looking like Reno Nevada? The reason I am asking is because We were going to Paradise California early this April to see the old mountains we used to live with and hopefully waterfalls and the flowers that pop up in the Spring as Northern California can be very beautiful if there is no drought but due to the ongoing drought we canceled it and will wait till next year if things look grim down there. Did we make the right choice in waiting? That's not the only reason we have canceled but it takes too long to explain on here SO I want to know if it's bone dry in Northern California or if any spring rains helped boosted the waterfalls? Am I and my family making the right choice to revisiting our old home area when their is a wetter winter? We are concerned there (either) won't be any waterfalls going up in the mountains or they'll all be lousy as when we lived there in the Spring the mountain highways often had waterfalls going over the cliff sides and it was fun pointing them out and the flowers all came into bloom at once so what does any of you think of the chances of seeing good waterfalls anywhere? Is there a better chance of a deeper spring snowpack next spring? I told my parents about the brewing El Nino however this El Nino seems to be developing at an unusual time of the year in spring rather then fall/winter so I want to know if we made the right choices to save our pennies and dimes as the old saying goes? We are also in the process of moving to Central Oregon because Dad is going to lose his job in July and is looking for land there to build a dome house and by accident we connected to a realtor that understands our needs and searched for us and found several to look at. Dad has some vacation time in April he set up before he knew he was going to lose his job so we are deciding to weather look at land or go down to California as we have money saved up from the winter. Mods feel free to move this if you think it's in the wrong spot but it is about California and I am afraid the OT board it will never get seen for my questions about going to visit California and the drought that will affect the trip.
  8. What was the amount? At our house is was about 6-7 inches and how come there wasn't any damage with the snow storm anywhere? The power didn't even flicker and I was expecting power issues like with the ice storms we have had. I am actually surprised at the lack of tree damage the Feb storms gave as many trees had huge branches that were leaning. About the Super Nino. Is it weird to have it develop during the Spring instead of fall/winter? Would that alter our summer into uncharted territory perhaps?
  9. http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/smiley_faces/jawdrop-smiley-face.gif?1302011382 Holy http://www.cool-smileys.com/images/33.gif That is high winds! Will that cause widespread structural damage? If that were to hit here in Oregon the entire valley would be devastated and look like the apocalypse came!
  10. I miss Rob. I talked to him a few times and his a pretty decent person that is under a lot of stress especially when certain users couldn't understand his technical posts but I enjoyed learning from him regardless. I have Autism which means when I have a one track mind in which I can learn quite a bit if I am not distracted and focus on my interests. Will he ever post his East Wind models up again?
  11. Only four inches in downtown Silverton of curbside snow recorded. The snow didn't even go past the curbline! Not even enough to get the snow ploughs and gritters out till Saturday night!
  12. Seems to me in the last 10 years when we have a La Nina the atmosphere tries to act like an El Nino and when we have an El Nino the atmosphere behaves more like La Nina. The atmosphere has gotten the confuzzles lately! I bet however it will be close to a record one since the SST's have been unusually warm everywhere.
  13. I would comment on his blog as I strongly wish for the computing power to be available but he has locked it up unless you have an Open ID account.
  14. I hear you! The last few years the NWS has been unusually horrible for short term here in the valley. They will say it's sunny when it's overcast causing the highs to be dropped 5 degrees or they will say it's cloudy today when in reality the sky is wall to wall sunshine! Point in case was last summer where they predicted highs of only 82-84 because of cloud cover not burning off till afternoon for most of August but in reality it was mostly clear at night and the ACTUAL highs wounded up between 90 and 95 with high dewpoints in the 60s at the McNary Airport KSLE. It seems to have started when they offered customized forecasts.
  15. So is this going to become the Western Weather Soap Opera Thread? Should I break out the popcorn? http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/forum/smileyvault-popcorn.gif
  16. Why are people getting reports of snow/graupel or whatever when it's sunny and 50F? This morning though did dip to the low 30s which is a big change but it has warmed up more since.
  17. What doe synoptic mean? I am just curious that's all. Thanks!
  18. I'm not talking about canceling. I am referencing to the 2 hour late start where for example if school starts at 8:15 it will start at 10:15 and they still have all 7 periods that only lasts 20 mins instead of the full 40. Late starts still get their state funding since late starts don't count as a snow day and often even still have hot lunch. I am surprised Utah doesn't adapt the late start system.= Marion County High School when I first went in 2001 they used to have a scheduled late start every other Wednesday then quietly dropped it without explaining why when they have had it for a long time and I don't remember why they had it but I think it was to give teachers more time to prep in the mornings. As long as it can be announced the night before if they feel confident a decent sized storm will wreck the morning commute schools should start using them to give plows more time and children can even play in the snow a little bit on the way.
  19. Yet the UK has had one of the mildest winters on record after a trend of snowy strings! No offense to you of course. In fact even the Netherlands have had poor skiing conditions with little to no snowfall.
  20. I have a gut feeling some kind of warm front will ruin the sunny days later this week and make it icky looking. Early last week was perfect. Warm but not muggy with the skies absolutely clear wall to wall for a couple days bringing very bright conditions. Last Thursday it was 55F at midnight! Yuck!!!!! We have a very insulated house and it gets sticky when it gets towards 50 or above and the skies are much more duller under warm front dirty ridge situations regardless. I hope the frost comes down to Oregon.
  21. When it's windy in Idaho do they have medium structure damage or power lines/transformers explode like here in Western Oregon when winds get up to the 45 to 50mph range or does it take a whole lot more? The last wind event in late January when winds gusted just under 45mph made our lights flicker like crazy though they didn't go out but it came pretty close at times and it wasn't even a real windstorm. From somebody I talked to who experienced the 1995 Wind Storm the power was out for the entire town of Silverton including both hills for slightly over 24 hours. Roths IGA had to close because of the duration of the power outage since usually the lights come back on after a few hours.
  22. From the last two storms here in the Salem/Silverton area was 1.20 in the rain bucket and a few highs in the 60s!. Yay! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rain/t111025.gif Too bad the mountain snowpack can't be recovered down here from a strong NW jet flow. It seems recent years the best rain scenarios come from the SW.
  23. (Says in a baby voice) Don't worry. Monsanto will take care of everything. We'll be all right. (sarcasm off) Meanwhile we have had several inches of rain from radiation free waters of Hawaii and all the lawns and yards of my area at least are absolutely GREEN!!! When the sun was at low angles it made the green stand out that much more! Last Spring was the greenest Spring we have actually ever had after the May and June rainy period. Check out the cool satellite images of this page showing how our winter was. http://www.rense.com/general96/pacstorms.html It's actually a very interesting article assuming there are still people left with reading and vocabulary skills who can handle it.
