June 2026 Observations and Discussion.
With partly cloudy skies the 6:30 AM temperature is 53. At this time there is an area of rain to the west, and it is moving in this direction, so showers are a good bet for today. Temperatures may be held down by the rain the forecast is for highs in the low 70’s there could be more rain tonight with a low around 60. There is a slight chance of a shower on Thursday with Friday looking partly cloudy, Highs should be in the mid to upper 70’s and lows in the mid to upper 50’s. A patter change is still on tap for the weekend and start of next week with much warmer temperatures and a good tase of humidity as well. Highs in the 80’s on Saturday and Sunday look to increase to the lower 90’s on Monday and Tuesday lows will be near 70 to the low 70’s There have now been 10 days in a row of below average temperatures at Grand Rapids. The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 76/51, there was 1 Heating Degree Day. There was no rainfall and there were no significant weather events. For today the average H/L is 82/61 the record high of 96 was in 1901 and 2009 the coolest high of 62 was in 1994. The record low of 41 was in 1961 the warmest low of 73 was in 2005 and 1997. The most rainfall of 2.88” was in 1994. Last year the H/L was 93/71. Some weather history for June 24th 1951, Twelve inches of hail broke windows and roofs, and dented automobiles, causing more than fourteen million dollars damage. The storm plowed 200 miles from Kingmand County KS into Missouri, with the Wichita area hardest hit. It was the most disastrous hailstorm of record for the state of Kansas. (David Ludlum) 1988. Highs of 98 degrees at Logan, UT, and 109 degrees at Rapid City, SD, equalled June records. Lightning killed twenty-one cows near Conway, SC. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data) Here in Michigan, 1998, A severe thunderstorm produced hail up to 3 inches in diameter and two tornadoes as it tracked across Eaton and Jackson Counties. The first tornado touched down just east of Eaton Rapids and downed trees and power lines. The second tornado hit Layton Corners in north central Jackson County. This tornado did about half a million dollars in damage as it did minor damage to about a dozen homes.- 1
