May 2026 Observations and Discussion
This should be a welcomed "stat padding" snowstorm for the Foothills and parts of the Denver metro. I wonder if Gary Lezak will be storm tracking??? -

May 2026 Observations and Discussion
It looks like May will be a below average month this year. But how will the upcoming summer end up? As you know it is no way anyone can predict how this summer season will play out but in looking at a couple of past summers heading into a strong or very strong El Nino it very well could be a cooler than average summer and of course there is a good chance that next winter could be mild and less snowfall. In looking at two past summers that were heading into a El Nino winter 2015/16 that summer had all 3 summer months below average here at Grand Rapids with June’s mean of 66.7 July’s mean of 70.8 and August’s mean of 39.6 that summer had a mean of 69.0 or -1.9. That year the fall and winter were both warmer than average and GR only had 61.1” of snowfall. The next summer I am looking at is the summer of 1972 as that summer was coming off a weak La Nina heading into a strong El Nino. That year June had a mean of just 63.5 that is -5.4 below average, July came in at 70.3 (-2.5) and August was 66.7 (-2.4) the summer mean of 67.8 the summer mean at Grand Rapids is 70.9. That fall season was colder than average at GR before warming up in January there was 65.5” of snowfall. So my guess is that this summer has a good chance of being cooler than average and could be frost even in June this year? After a windy but warm day yesterday the overnight low here in my yard was 49. I did not receive much rainfall overnight as only 0.02” fell is a brief shower. Today will be the start of a rather cool period for early May with highs only in the 50’s and lows in the 30’s there will be a chance of frost on Wednesday night. There will become a little warmer over the weekend with highs in the 60’s and lows in the lower 40’s there will also be a slight chance of showers. The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 76/42 there was 0.03” of rainfall the highest wind gust was 43 MPH out of the SW. Weather conditions were thunder and light rain. For today the average H/L is 66/45 the record high of 89 was in 1959 the coldest high of 44 was in 1954 the record low of 28 was in 1983 the warmest low of 66 was in 1949. The most rainfall of 1.73” was in 1976 the most snowfall of 0.3” was in 1954. Last year the H/L was 70/48 and there was 0.05” of rain. Some May 5th weather history. 1917 The same storm which a day earlier produced eight inches of snow in the Texas panhandle, produced a foot of snow at Denver CO, their heaviest snow of record for the month of May. (David Ludlum) in Michigan 2003 F1 tornado hit outside of Leonard in Oakland County. There were also many reports of hail ranging from 0.75 inch to 0.88 inch throughout the cities of Linden, Flint, Fenton, Grand Blanc, Thetford Center, Burton and Davison. Some of these places also reported wind from 70 to 75 mph. -
