The whole 1901-02 wet season was a pretty dynamic one: -October 1901 brought one of the latest truly summerlike spells of weather in our region's history. The downtown Seattle site spiked to 79F on the 22nd, amidst a stretch where we strung along four consecutive days in the 70s, punctuated by a 74F on the 24th, amidst a ten day stretch of reaching at least the mid 60s, all in the back half of the month. Astoria hit 73F on the 25th, Portland reached 78F on the 22nd/23rd and 75F on the 25th (seven consecutive days in the 70s!), Eugene 78F on the 22nd, and Vancouver WA notched eight consecutive 70F-burgers. While it's true that we've spiked beyond the 70F mark as late as November, the summerlike duration of October 1901 made it a golden standard Indian Summer. It was a well above normal October for the region, registering around 2-5F above our modern normals. Only 1944 provides us a comparable analog, which focused mainly on the interior and Oregon southward (in Eugene and Spokane 1944 is the gold standard, with no daily records still standing from 1901) -Late January 1902 saw a potent arctic spell scour deep into into the westside, typical fare for the time, yet top shelf-quality for the modern age. Seattle scrounged together 9.2" of snow from the introductory clipper on the 24th, before plunging to a respectable 26/13 spread on the 25th. We notched three subfreezing highs over the course of a seven day stretch which failed to hit 40F, and piled up 13.8" of wet snow. Astoria put together a really impressive five day stretch from the 25th to the 29th where they saw two subfreezing highs, a low in the teens, and no highs above 35F. Portland proper registered five consecutive days in the 20s and six days below freezing, with 6.8" of snow to show for it, spread out amongst several smaller systems throughout the spell. Eugene pulled off four days below freezing, and even Grants Pass managed a 33F high on the 29th, so it was a regionwide event. -April snow on 4/8/1902, totaling half an inch in Seattle.
