It's not talked about a lot (especially here in the PNW) but there is real wildfire risk out east. Much of the Ohio River valley corridor is relatively safe since there is almost no really truly dry windflow in that region, but the deep south and northern MN are prone to dry years and big fires, thanks largely due to the ENSO cycle.
When I was doing research on MN I came across the year of 1910. At first I thought it was an error on the graph, but nope, many areas that average as much rain as we do came away with less than a foot that entire year. There are whole papers written on that drought. One of the bigger disasters in MN state history occurred that year when a massive fire swept through Spooner and Baudette, killing 29 people without warning.
