In fact, historical research suggests it was probably the strongest tornado ever documented in Oregon. What happened The tornado struck Long Creek in Grant County on June 3, 1894. Long Creek was a relatively prosperous frontier community at the time, having been incorporated just three years earlier. The storm apparently formed on a mountain roughly three miles south of town. The editor of the Long Creek Eagle, Orin Patterson, witnessed its development and described two ominous clouds coming together over the mountain. A funnel then descended and moved almost due north toward town.
